Forums - Sony - Pachter: "I Feel Bad For Sony On The PSP," "Apple Ate Their Lunch"

If the PSP Go had a fair pricetag, ~100$, it could have been a huge success.

It could but the download only method for games will still prevent it from being a success IMO.

Is he tired of doming Nintendo and moving on to Sony?

He added: “What they did with the PSP which I thought was brilliant at the time, was that they positioned it older. They said the DS has a bunch of “cartooney” games, you know Pokemon – games that are skewed a little bit younger – we’re going to have the PSP and we’re going to have Grant Theft Auto and we’re going to have really cool, edgy, Monster Hunter kind of games and we’re going to capture that older audience and it didn’t work.”

Wrong, Pachter. The move was not "brilliant at the time" because Sony did the exact same move when it entered the market in 1995. Nintendo saw the obvious move coming and beat them to the punch with Sony's own game of "appealing to a wider audience"

Sony: Hah! Our PSP caters for those older audiences than your portables do!

Nintendo: Yeah, you pulled that one on us before. That's why our portable is going to be designed to appeal to everybody.

Pachter is an idiot who gives out his analysis for free because who wants to pay for his idiotic thoughts when most people on this site knows as much or more than he does.
The psp is a success selling close to 60 mil
It has sold a decent amount of games and works well as a multi media device.

PSP sold 60 million. That is a success. The only thing I don't like is the games price. $40 for PSP games is too much to me. That's why people hack they PSP cause of the high price games. The PSP is high also. It been out for 5 years and it still cost to much. I think the PSP should be under $150 now.

Don't feel sorry Sony...feel sorry me and the other PSP owners who keep waiting for some quality exclusive software to be built for the machine.  Enough of the ports and PS3 dumb downs, how about some new IP's that take advantage of the PSP's power and take into consideration it only has one analog stick.

Its just being outcompeted by specialist devices/other companies doing it better.

1. Gaming it gets crushed by the DS.
2. Music it gets crushed by iPhone, iTouch, iPod + other similar.
3. Movies is sort of half dead/half alive but I doubt it'll survive the launch of the iPad/Courier + others.

I don't really think piracy comes into it, the DS is infact even easier to pirate and the PC is easier again to pirate and yet games still sell.

1. For games it has a different appeal and capabilities. Games that sell well on the PSP might be ignored on the DS, and vice versa.

2. Its not a convenient device for music. You don't need a giant screen if you just want to listen to music.

3. There are lots of cheap devices that play movies now, but iPad is not the device that will crush the PSP. The iPad is still far more expensive than a PSP and too big for convenience.

I think people underestimate the PSP. It currently doesn't sell a ton of software, but its a very popular device.
