Forums - Sales - PS3 guaranteed 13 million for FY 2010

VGC numbers have PS3 sales for FY 2010 currently sitting at:

Console PS3
Total
12,893,611

With one week to go and <107K left to sell there would have to be a global shortage of PS3's for it to fall short of that mark. And that's retail sales! Shipped could easily come in at more than this, which is what SOny based its projections on.

If Sony only projected 13 million consoles shipped for the FY, and only tooled up enough factories to deliver 13 million then it's no wonder that the lmost unprofitable market for PS3 HW is being short shipped.

Sony might say that the response to the Slim and pricecut were unexpected but their projection for the total year has turned out to be smack on target.

A pity the same can't be said about their initial PSP projection.

Can PS2 now fully retire from the market knowing that the PS brand is in steady hands?

you mean ... 2009 right?

Great to see that Sony not amending their figures has worked out to look very well for the company and i'm sure their investors will look on this as very good news! I think Sony could easily ship 14-15million this FY if they ramp up production asap!

I wonder what they will report shipped numbers as...

Will definately be over 13 Million. But where over 13 Million?

And i hope they project something crazy like 15 Million PS3's for 2010

Nope. The number for the financial year is the year in which the FY ends because in long form you say "the financial year ending 31 March 2010", so in abbreviated form you write FY 2010.

@ Carl. If Sony project something like 15 million shipped for FY '11 then it means they have more than PS Move and GT5 in mind. 15 million means another price cut before Christmas I reckon. Another projection of 13 million means they are not looking for any substantial price movement, though I expect them to introduce Move bundled with a PS3 at the current 120Gig price, at least for Japan and USA.

@ kowenicki. Correct everyone was predicting a slim and a pricecut (mostly price cut) as being necessary to get to that 13 million shipped. But there were plenty of doubters (red, blue and green) who thought slim and pricecut would fail to lift PS3 by enough to achieve that sort of growth.

Well, if don't think they would need a pricecut.

Probably a SKU shift about like the 360 had... And maybe introduce colours.

Then bundle GT5 with every system in Europe.

And you have a winner

Let me guess:

1) PS3 120GB bundle with move + Sports champion for U$299

2) PS3 250GB bundle with move + a hardcore game - different ones, always changing - for U$349

3) New colors introduced in all territories

4) Get some type of Monster Hunter - even the 360 got one - maybe MH3G?

5) Release GT5 in all territories

You think that's enough for 15 million? Would be close if, and only if, there's a big hype behind the move.

Bundle GT5 heavily in Europe and we might see 100k consoles weekly in others. that should be enough for 15 mil xD

I'm glad you identified it as such. That's the truth.

ANd yeah, that's pretty crazy. They were definitely talking shipped and those are sales numbers. I think the average shelf quantity sits at around 1.5-2 mill, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are less than a mill on stores shelves worldwide right now.

Yeah, man. Wow. I really love you and your logic right now.

There is always a significant shortfall around the spring, summer months, so basically, they are pretty much looking at another fy2010, but with another 2m in there somewhere, which means that not only is the slim going to have to somehow maintain what it did upon "relaunch" but also attract another 2m, for a total of 4-5m extra. Maybe subtract 1m for the spring summer months yoy increase...what the hell are they going to show??

Gotta be a pricecut in there somewhere. Also, I'm starting to wonder about these recent stories talking about "PS3 slim is not an *official* slim", and I'm thinking that they've gotta be breaking even by now. ps3 slim costs were 336$ in september, not including royalties or packaging. It's gotta be something like 316$ right now, all inclusive. When the slim and price-drop hit, Sony was still losing about 20$ on each 40gig. So, Sony is not afraid to drop price when they still haven't gone hardware profitable. AARRGGGHH so much to think about now!
