It certainly takes a while to get used to. Thankfully, we don't have to get used to all the weapons, or the longsword section of the game would kill me. :/

Well each weapon can hold it's own, it's a weapon after all, it really comes to how you choose to use them.
Being a Gunner I have 1/2 the def of Blade Masters period, so it get's very tricky in some fights as I don't have the leeway to take that 1 hit usually.
The worst part of being a gunner is that I can't just go all out on the monsters when I'm with a team, I risk messing the team up or worse. So I seriously have to pick my shots and be semi-supportive. (debuffing)
Or clust shots aimed particularly and timed specifically to take enemies from the sky, it's possible to control the monster totally but I can't actually get in to do what I could do.
In Offline, I fight Uragaan and just unload pellets on it then triple burst water and it dies before I run out of water shots. I feel each weapon is that way, so I settle back and let my team mates get it in also.
That's really the key to online, just knowing what your team mates are doing and avoid interrupting them.
The plus side is that all my shots are magnetically attracted to where I aim now.
I'm Unamerica and you can too.

You're absolutely correct. I just have no idea how to use the longsword, and I'm "iffy" with the hammer as well.
I do want to try the bowgun next though. It seems like it'd be essential to have a truly great party, but it sounds like almost no one uses it online.
To be a proper Gunner you'd probably be best with a maxed farm offline and fishing fleet.
It's fine to buy the basic ammo's but the more effective ones like Dragon element shots, Crag shots and Fire shots need to be created for the Gunner to be cost effective, that also means that you spend more time thinking of when to load a specific ammo type for the situation your in.
It's fun though, but the style is very different from anything else in the game.

Get fishing harpoons from the potion store, weaken the sharqs down, then hit them with the harpoon. Took me about 30 sharqs to get one, supposedly with ~30% chance. After that, you'll unlock a bunch of extra ***** quests, so don't think you've quite finished yet....
My themeforest portfolio:
When it comes to SnS, I'm all about the poison, if I want to do damage, I'd stick to other weapons, I can para better with bowgun and do it just fine with LS while dishing out a ton of damage, so SnS is just really good for applying poison for me. I don't have a standard setup either, I go Blade or Gun randomly depending on my mood, and still using Barroth armor because I gem them for +20 attack so I hit harder, eventually gonna go back to Selene and Amagi once I can upgrade it to the next tier.

This should be helpful -

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
Where can I gather Blue Kelbi Horn or Gluehopper.
Both seem to be in the way of me getting something better than a Bone Sword+
Pixel Art can be fun.
