Who says sequels don't move hardware!?

Me.

Sequels don't move hardware

See. Now what!?

hhmm, i'm just playing Yakuza 3 and noticed something regarding that gif

look at the boy back there in the red shirt, his greatest wish is to become a wrestler and i believe he bears a striking resemblance to a certain forum member

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Looking forward to: FF Versus XIII / LBP2 / The Last Guardian / Yakuza 4 / ICO Collection

Why would torne move hardware? Surely their are better and cheaper dvrs that don't require you have a ps3. I can see it succeeding as a peripheral, but not as a driver of ps3 sales.

Apparently it sold 62000 units, where 25% came from PS3 bundles... so it did move quite some hardware

I didn't realize there were bundles. Thanks for letting me know.

Kid sounds like a winner. I really need to hurry up and finish FFXIII so I can start on Yakuza 3.

The Japan preview is way off again.

It didn't even mention torne.
It also underestimated Yakuza 4 (a bit).

I sense some Nintendo bias in the Japan preview.

I like the clear and concise, perfectly logical deductions you've made here. Instead of approaching the preview under the mindset that it is an early preview with estimates, you've instead concluded that any numbers that are off are that way because the staff is clearly biased for Nintendo. Your evidence is undeniable and your claims are humble. What would we do without more outlooks like this on the site?

U are 100% right in what u are saying.

I know the preview only samples one retailer and that I can't really expect accurate numbers.

And I wouldn't want to make Nintendo bias responsible for numbers that are off even though it sounds like that.

It would be stupid. I wasn't being fully serious with that last line, more like just teasing.

However, the tone of the preview seems to favor Nintendo a bit (even though that doesn't influence what numbers the estimates will end up having).

And I wonder how the preview hasn't even considered something like torne + Yakuza 4 to have a bigger effect on hardware which it clearly had.

The preview expected hw to be in the same range as the week before which wasn't a very good estimation.

~~

ASCII Media reported that 62k units of torne were sold in the first week.

Sega shipped more than 500k units of Yakuza 4.

I can understand your reaction and all the more so, because if I remember correctly the Source actually stated in the comments that Yakuza 3 didn't push more than 27K consoles and there was no reason whatsoever for Yakuza 4 to push more hardware, completely obliterating the fact that back in February 2009 the PS3 price was still at 39'990Y (way too high for a gaming machine by japanese standards) and that the PS3 "slim" was still only a vague rumor.

Is it just me or in those gifs do the people getting "Thrown" force themselves for an easier throw? For example, they seem to be jumping right before they get thrown

Oh my god! My worldview has just been shattered!

LMAO!  Great response.

@ Jin_Shihouin

I feel they do have a bias towards Nintendo.  Which is kinda clear near the holiday.  I think two years ago they had to adjust the Wii number by quite a bit.  If memory serves me, people said it was around a mil.  And last year I think they were stating originally that the Wii had around twice the number of sales the Wii actually got.  But for me, it's no big deal.  It's just a small bias.  It's not like it's so bad they refuse to make adjustments if they recieve different/better info, so I'm not sweating it.

DVR kit and Yakuza 4 cause surge in Sony's homeland.

March 25, 2010 - PS3 is on fire in Japan thanks to two key releases: a peripheral and a sequel.

For the week covering March 15 through March 21, data from ASCII Media Works shows the system topping the hardware charts for the first time in three months. PS3's 45,000 units sold represents a jump of 69.5% over the previous week.

The reason for the system's sudden surge are Torne and
Yakuza 4, both released on the 18th.

Torne is a Japan-only kit that converts your PS3 into a DVR. The sub $100 kit sold 62,000 units and sold out at many shops, according to ASCII's data.

For Yakuza 4's sales figures, we turn to separate tracking firm Media Create. Its sales report for the week put Yakuza 4 at the top, with 384,000 units sold. That's a bit above Yakuza 3's debut last year, and four times the week's number two title, PSP's Gundam Assault Survive.

PS3 is currently at the 4.95 million unit sold mark, ASCII reports. It will likely cross the 5 million mark in the next two weeks.
