Forums - Sales - ASCII: Japan PS3 sales up 69.5% week ending March 21

"March 25, 2010 - PS3 is on fire in Japan thanks to two key releases: a peripheral and a sequel.

For the week covering March 15 through March 21, data from ASCII Media Works shows the system topping the hardware charts for the first time in three months. PS3's 45,000 units sold represents a jump of 69.5% over the previous week.

The reason for the system's sudden surge are Torne and Yakuza 4, both released on the 18th.

Torne is a Japan-only kit that converts your PS3 into a DVR. The sub $100 kit sold 62,000 units and sold out at many shops, according to ASCII's data.

For Yakuza 4's sales figures, we turn to separate tracking firm Media Create. Its sales report for the week put Yakuza 4 at the top, with 384,000 units sold. That's a bit above Yakuza 3's debut last year, and four times the week's number two title, PSP's Gundam Assault Survive.

PS3 is currently at the 4.95 million unit sold mark, ASCII reports. It will likely cross the 5 million mark in the next two weeks."

PS3 vs 360 sales

I think 300k for PS3 this week was very much possible if only damn Sony sorted out their stock issues in the Americas.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Also interesting:

"According to Classy Gamer citing Sega's most recent sales figures, the latest Yakuza entry has already shipped over 500,000 copies in Japan. This means it has already outsold Yakuza 3, which apparently sold just under 500,000 (499,436) before the end of 2009. "

No 300k week for PS3 because shortages in US.

This week PS3 sells around 240k.

It would have been a bit of a stretch to hit 145k-150k in Americas this week even with GOW3 and no supply issues. I figure if supply had been plentiful for the week it might have topped out at around 130k-140k at most.

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4

Not suprised

The PS3 was sold out here at the big retailers as well, then there were Heavy Rain 250 GB PS3 bundles which sold out quickly, but in time for God of War 3 the PS3 seemed to be in full stock again the last time I checked including cheap 120 GB PS3 slims.

I don't think it will matter much for the long run, those who want games like Heavy Rain or God of War 3 can only get them on the PS3.

Torne will be a hardware mover, and a big one at that.. its selling like crack in japan. So I suspect PS3 hardware should stay atleast slightly above were it was most of this year

Yakuza 3 shipped 500,000+ copies as well. It's yet to determine if Yakuza 4 would outsell Yakuza 3.

Shipped is not equal to sold. Certainly Yakuza 4 has not outsold Yakuza 3 yet since there are only 384,000 copies of Yakuza 4 sold comparing to 499,436 copies of Yakuza 3 (excluding best release).

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
