Forums - Gaming - Reviews are irrelevant,

Video game reviews are irrevelant, yes I said it, as Im writing this I can see my mom and kid brother playing Just Dance on the Wii, a game that got blasted by professional reviews and they are having the time of their lives. Which brings me to the following conclusion.

Video game reviews are written with a single demographic in mind, the hardcore gamer, even if they are 'reviewing' a supposed casual game like Just Dance almost to purposly mock it, but if a casual game reviewer would have reviewed it it would easily be a 9/10 simply for the fun it provides?

thoughts on my blasphemey?

I am in agreement actually least concerning the scoring. I wish reviews would be just facts not opinions. When I want opinions of a game I ask people here.

By your logic reviews are relevant to hardcore gamers, therefore they're not irrelevant.

Pretty much 100% agreement from me. Reviews should be written based off how much the target market would enjoy the game, not how much the reviewer did. The best example I can remember of this not occuring was an IGN review of one of those football (soccer) manager games. It received a rubbish score because you "didn't actually get to play any football" Clearly if an entire, economically feasible, albeit small genre has been created around this concept, then we have to assume the concept is valid.

Sales matter, reviews do not. Just Dance is literally crap. Most people don't even realize what's going on. I made my mom dance to bird is the word at a gamestop.

If you're just having fun with your kid, then yeah reviews are irrelevant.

If you're looking for a great game that will be well made, challenging/rewarding, great story, etc. then you should probably listen to reviews to at least some extent.

Like if a game gets a 40 on metacritic you know its not worth your time but if it gets a 70 on meta it could still be good so its up to you.

@Scotty, O-D-C, Game4Fun - That's great, I'll play Metal Gear Solid and Mass Effect, you can play Rogue Warrior and Big Rigs.

Where does 58 on Metacritic come into it? Because Wii Play got a 58, and considering it's a $10 game, was one of my best purchases of the generation

Thoughts on your blasphemy? Well, you've been pretty bad in other threads, but there's none here to comment on. You're right, reviews are crap, which makes sites like Metacritic crap in exchange. (And I've been saying that for years.) Nope, they only look at what they want to see in gaming, and review based on that narrow view, rather than what people who are likely to buy a game think. Yes, we know, your narrow-minded frat-core shooter fan won't buy Let's Dance, whether you give it a 1 or a 9. So don't try to pander to them. Look at who might actually buy it. Oh, but wait... that entails actual work; silly me...
