Forums - Sales - Will the DS surpass the PS2 with the recent announcement of the 3DS?

They will do to the DS what Sony did to the ps2. EG let it keep selling for aslong as possible. So yes the DS will surpass the ps2 in hardware sales.

Well to answer your question, yes absolutely. DS should have no issue still passing it.

Now as for the second part, we've definitely covered this before. I know there are many people on this site and other forums that like to make their own opinions and decisions on what they consider is a "new system" or console. But, the only real way to define it is by the maker's of the system themselves. Nintendo has confirmed that the 3DS is indeed a new system and not in the DS line. Therefore it is the next generation console, not a new model for DS like DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL were.

So when it comes out, yes we will have to have a new tracking bar for it.

Quite easily, by at least 15 million when all is said and done.

I'm more interested in whether the 3DS can sell faster than the DS and Wii systems.

Yes on both counts I think.

I think its very likely that 3DS will have a stronger start than the DS, for these reasons:

  1. Nintendo has learned a lot about how to attract the mass audience since 2004
  2. PSP2 will not pull away developers in the early going the way PSP was doing at first
  3. Developers will not be as hesitant about investing in the 3DS because Nintendo is being absolutely clear that this is their nextgen handheld instead of muddying the waters with talk of a "three pillar strategy"
  4. Developers will not fumble around wondering what to do with 3D the way it took them a couple of years to figure out what to do with the second screen.

It might beat it in hardware but I highly doubt it will catch up with the software.

This is a matter of opinion.

@OT

Yes, easily.

Even after the DS came out, and then the XBox 360, and then the Wii and PS3, the GBA was outselling the PS3 for a very long time.

So yes. By the end of the year, maybe even before the 3DS launches in Japan.

The idea of selling faster than the Wii is terrifying.
