Forums - Nintendo - Anyone want to go on record that the Vitality sensor is just a gimmick?

I'm on the fence. The appeal of Wii Fit was clear and easy to see in my opinion, adding the new value of 'fun' to fitness products was exactly what was needed to begin disrupting fitness, and it was easy to conceive of fun fitness products.

I like the fact that Wii VS is exploring the realm of taking the player's physical state, but I find it harder to conceive of interactive or fun "relaxation products" that use the VS. But then, Nintendo's imagination >>> my imagination.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I really think Nintendo could be on to something with this Vitality Sensor, though I think you're right in that it probably won't reach Wii Fit success, because there is much more of a fitness craze in the West, and in particular the US, than a "relaxation" craze. But at the same time, in a society where more and more people are running around like chickens with their heads cut off from one place to another, and stresful things like long hours at work and school, there is definitly the potential for a relaxation game to make its mark.

Those who may want to play a game but also want to relax are pretty much out of luck right now, so a Wii Relax would definitly be venturing into a new market. How big that new market is is anyone's guess. But I have a hunch this thing could be a huge phenomenon if excecuted the right way.

Imagine the possibilites of hypnosis game, metitation game, or stress reliever, or heart monitor to go alongsite Wii Fit. Maybe a game could be made where each time your heart beats, enemies pop up and you have to shoot them. And it could add some interesting twists to core games as well, like the obvious one, a psychological thriller that messes with the game the more stressed you are, or like Myamoto said, a Zelda game that can make enemies more powerful the faster your heart rate is. It really opens the door for all sorts of creative possibilites and fullfill a need that games just don't provide yet.

It's Nintendo. They've never screwed up, so I'll trust them.

Considering what had happened with motion control, and how everyone got on board now with it, I figured it would be interesting to see who NOW thinks that the vitality sensor is nothing more than just a gimmick.  Anyone want to see that they don't see it amounting to much now?

Or, if you believe it will have a huge potential impact, and may end up getting copied by Sony and Nintendo, please feel free to speak up.

Myself, I hold that MAYBE it will have an impact it if happens to actually lend to gameplay.

Lol? Nintendo are so successful, even they are going to copy themselves now? XD

I heard there was this on-rails game coming out for it where you rub your socked feet on the carpet and build electrical energy which charges shots and repairs broken machines.
Releasing with the game is Mario Karpet+ for those with hardwood floors.

Day one for me - will be the best thing ever, mark my words...

I would like you to explain better your thoughts why it will be the best thing ever if you have the time :P

@ OP

This type of thread should be done for every Nintendo peripheral or console that comes out. It may be useful to serve some crow some years later :P

What do you think the point of this thread is?

best thing ever? seriously doubt it will be in the top 100 best things ever.

my problem is that it has to be attached to your finger with a cable that attaches to the wii mote presumably?

this limits its uses quite massively... how can you use this with a wiimote and a nunchuck?

You are assuming that the device will attach to your finger as the demonstration piece shown, however this could easily be done as a wrist strap. If this is put to use, it will most assuredly be one of those "greatest" devices added to gaming. The ideas for it's use are quite limitless.
