It's actually holding up ok.

The main tracking services like NPD, chart-track and Media Create are not showing this shift in sales. NPD for US only really showed that Xbox 360 sells a lot of software. Bioshock 2 just topped the charts last month for example. Chart-track reported some strong Xbox 360 sales as well. Sure MAG, FFXIII and Heavy Rain had decent to good sales on the PS3, too. Media Create for Japanese sales is easy. But except the relaunch of RE 5, Star Ocean and RoF, there was no really big PS3 game in Japan this year. And those three combined sold like 400k this year. Looking at worldwide sales for the PS3 software (especially older and smaller games) makes me wonder.
I have no doubts that MAG, FF, Heavy Rain sold well, but I doubt that the older games sell way better on PS3 suddenly. especially with no tracking service confirming this in any way. And I doubt that Games on Demand is that big on Xbox 360 that it could eat so many retail-sales of the older games. |
GTA: PS centric title last gen, maybe new addopters buy it more then the more online gaming oriented 360 owners? GTA4 has an online component, but FPSs are more popular.
Madden: its only for a couple of week... maybe a pricedrop for the PS3 version?
SUGC: that game did better on the PS3 from the go, so its no surprise that the leggs are better IMO :|
UFC: Now that is odd, but maybe the budget re-release helped
Budget titles tend to have great legs on the PS3
NFS:S: oh common, NFS is a racing game, and racing games ( especially NFS) allways did better on Sony platforms...
AoT2: that is odd... the first title is explainable with the budget re-release, and lack of AAA 3rd preson cover shooters on the PS3, but the second beats me :|
RF:G: you get that game for free is I recall correctly, if you redeem your Darksider coupon
CoD and DS: well DS is an action/adventure/horror title, its in the budget line, so thats plausable, but CoD... well, beats me :-S

And Microsoft has had no exclusives from themselves yet this year. We will see where we are at by the end of September. Let's do a comparison after Halo: Reach, Crackdown 2, and Alan Wake are out. |
That is exactly what I was thinking. Tons of Sony heavy lifter and... waouw ... 3%...
Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

What I mean is, they're not even close to being "heavy lifters". MAG and Heavy Rain were never expected to do amazing numbers.

You buy Metro for Xbox 360 or PC and get the PS3 version of Red Faction? ---- Madden is something I can't explain at all. The installbase in the US is much bigger for the Xbox 360, but this game, which is almost US only, sells better on PS3. If that is not strange enough, the preorders for Madden 11 are much higher for the PS3 version as well. I know it is very hard to track old games with small sales, but it still doesn't make sense. |
Madden is because of the shift of Madden Nation to use Playstation instead of 360 controllers. It was worth whatever Sony paid to get them to switch over.

Definitly. 3% isn't nearly enough to be accurate... espically considering all the games that sell less and are harder to track.

Im going to bring data to an opinion fight!!!
Thanks goes to Zed a fellow New Zealander for preparing this data. We are so awesome, praise for we are few but we are all awesome ok?

As you can see from the above, the Xbox 360 has had a more steady level of sales over time and this is also reflected in worldwide charts whilst the PS3 has been more a slow starter. This means the Xbox 360 has an older console userbase on average, even more than when factoring in just the earlier launch. So the PS3/Xbox 360 closing in on relative retail sales is to be expected as new purchasers of consoles buy the most software on average and people who have had a console for a while don't.
However this isn't the only part of the game market that you can compare between the consoles, its just the visible difference. I have messaged certain people on Beyond3D who would know and from their responses I know that Xbox Live is a significantly more vibrant place in terms of sales when compared to PSN for the indie type games. This is also supported from statements made in a podcast by Alan Greenburg, hero of the battle of the HD (JK
) that the Xbox 360 Live points cards were the highest selling accessory, topping even the Xbox Live subscription cards.
Retail games are competing for time/money with online purchasing and Xbox Live Arcade is quite strong and getting stronger every year even relative to the PS3 and in addition to this, Microsoft has 92 games on demand titles. You can say that Games on Demand only accounts for a few % of the retail sales, however the difference between the two consoles is in the order of a few %. What this means is that Vgchartz can only give the estimated retail positions of disc based product and not the absolute positions in terms of software for both consoles.
Tease.
This is why Sony have run losses to get HW up. SW is the $ tree. Only Ninty has HW profits. M$ E+D are making something per box and more on peripherals. 120 million more HD SW sold in 1 extra year is impressive for an upstart.
The newest PS3 owners are buying more but games are a big part of this turnaround. 360 might lose some of their leads on their evil twin but not 3m HW as some people are hoping. In SW a virtual tie would be a win for Sony. Grats on this wk's inbound nos. GoW3 is a truly impressive looking title.
Nintendo's looming 1T SW make PS360 efforts look tame. Yes, I have to say that. It's teh rulz.
