Forums - Gaming - New editorial about the review system and people who complain about it

People also tend to forget that there is no such thing as a perfect game or movie, they can always be better. Giving a game a 97/100 means its near perfection, what does that make the developer do? Milk the franchise to death. If devs never hear constructive criticism how will they ever improve their games?

Actually, I don't think that has much to do with the critical reception, but sales.

Can you give me a score from your article so I don't have to read it all? Thanks!

Well I thought it was really good. I just want all games to be treated to the same level of harshness and the only way to make any change is if VGChartz is part of that stand. Are you prepared to give a game like God of War an 8? or a 7?

Tease.

Yea though some games get insane reception just for their sales like MW2. AC1 wasn't that great reviewed but sold an insane imount and AC2 is so much better then part 1 its insane.

If a game sells really good but isn't that good reviewed the dev will want to keep the franchise alive so they try to improve.

No, because it's far too good for that. And we can't suddenly change the review scale after writing 400 reviews.

So Reviewers can just print any score they like and not expect a backlash?

I give Halo Reach 2 out of 10 because I think it is gay.

That may be my opinion but I'm pretty sure I'd get a backlash from that!

The review scores from the films that are way below metacritc are from crappy relatively unknown review sites. If any of them had of come from a reputable magazine (eg. Empire) I would of complained about them.

The reason people are pissed at Edge is because it USED to be a high quality rerputable magazine but within the last few years it has been gradually going down the toilet. Publishing random scores like they've just pulled them out a hat. And some would say (me included) that they show a marked bias in their reviews. I would be just as pissed at Empire if they reviewed movies as badly as Edge reviews games.

Isn't it funny that whenever Crappy reveiws are debated, Edge is mentioned?  Strange that...

Also, It's not just a few pissed off fanboys that think Edge is biased, half the people on VGChartz think it is:(http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=101000).

Reviewers have an obligation to give reliable impartial opinions, that is their F***ing job!

Is that what I said at all? You didn't list any reasons why it is "gay", you didn't list anything about the game at all.

I just shake my head at some of the knee-jerk responses to this piece. I don't think this is a complicated idea to wrap your head around and I point out several things in the article that some of you just want to ignore in favor of a quick half-wit response to one sentence in the piece.

In that post, you did EXACTLY WHAT I COMPLAINED ABOUT in the article. Instead of examining the entire piece as a whole, you cherry-picked one thing (instead of a review score) and ran off with that as if the point of the article was "reviewers are allowed to say ANYTHING, even if they don't back up their points with a thought-out detailing of their opinion".

Oh, and I don't give a rat's ass what half the posters on VGC think. They're some of the biggest offenders and causes to why I wrote this article in the first place.

As for impartial reviews, I'll take Ebert's stance on how to properly review a piece over yours, thanks.

How did I cherry pick?   Was that the ONLY 3 lines that I posted?  In-fact did you just cherry pick my response?!!!  Pot, kettle, black.

FYI I did read the whole article, the message of it was pretty much - reviewers are entitled to their own opinions.  Am I not entitled to my opinions on reviewers?  If a reviewer is good, I will say so.  And If a reviewer is shit I will criticise them.  A critic should be able to take criticism after-all.

I edited out lines of your post but still responded to all of them with exception of the Edge comments. I'm not going to start into a discussion about the merits or lack thereof of each publication. I'm just not interested in that debate. If you want to find my opinions on the subject, just do a forum search. I've argued that subject more times than I care to count.

And YES, you did cherry-pick. You started off your point with "I can just call Halo:Reach gay and get away with it because it's my opinion", DESPITE some of the last lines of my article being "If you can't spend enough time to read a review to see if the reviewer marked off points for a game element that you consider to be a plus, you should really just shut the hell up and not talk about the review. Or maybe you should read the piece and argue the validity of its points. That would be a novel concept."

JESUS. CHRIST.

Some of you people amaze me.

Oh yeah, and for the mods, that was a joke.
