Do DRM and DLC Cause Piracy?

Maybe. 9 12.50%

No. 12 16.67%

Absolutely.

Personal example here... I bought a game (I shall not name the game), it was such a pain to get it to work due to DRM. I haven't really bought another game since.

I don't mind paying for games, as long as it's easy and convenience.

DRM = no game from that dev / publisher for me. Seriously, forcing me to be online just to play it? Fuck off

I was looking forward Command and Conquer 4... online required DRM... no thanks, I'll wait for Starcraft 2. Bastards.

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

The more paid DLC a game has, the less likely I am to buy it - I don't want to have to shell out 20 instalments of 5$ in addition to whatever the game costs just to have the complete game.

Dont know much about DRM as I dont play game son the PC, but Ive heard loads of people complaining about it, with the levels of frustrations varying depending on the game.

For DLC, a lot of people on this site complain about it and here I really do not understand. Ok, sometimes there are times when I accept DLC is so pointless it not worth even existing or some content is cut out of a game just to be released later. But most of the time the DLC expands the gaming experience and/or takes in a new direction. Multiplayer Map remakes are branded as 'rip-offs', maybe loads of people liked the version on the old game and now want it on the new one (Halo 3, MW2). Then theres full games Ive seen people have said should be DLC such as Halo 3 ODST(this game wasnt full price where I got it so the American $60 argument doesnt hold up for me) , L4D2 (some people still complain about this even though most have now accept it as not being a rip-off) and the FIFA World Cup 2010. I remember the times before DLC and online gaming, where my games were finished when Id completed the campaign. This is why DLC is not a rip-off in most cases, even if some publishers are taking advantage of it.

DRM = yes
DLC = no

the thing is maps used to be free. any one could create some. anyone could create a mod...

Games like MW2 basically took out the expandable by the community from games.

Heck there'd never have been a counterstrike if games were as they are today...

and yeah, i'm talking PC, cause consoles never had free content as there was no online before, so you could argue it's normal for them, but still:

Paying 20$ for a new 8 hour campain, a few new units and some game enhancements is an expansion to the experience.

paying 5$ for a new unit type does not get you any additional experience off the game.

paying for code already on the game disc or cut from the game is just a big FU to customers.

Ive never done much gaming on the PC, and the games I played on it werent games where DLC was really an option. Can understand why that last one would cause a lot of people to hack the game. The only game series I personally know that does this is all the main Pokemon games, except Nintendo releases them for free through random events

People who do it cause it.
