Forums - Gaming - are jrpgs dying?

I think they are not dying, but they are not as popular as in the PS1 era with the final fantasy VII boom. I think the last RPG i beat was Fina Fantasy X and Im playing right now FFIV, but thats it, I used to play a lot of RPGS in the late 90s but dunno, i prefer mario galaxy or gears online.

Besides FF, what were those big JRPGS in the past?

Bioware's Sonic Chronicles killed the genre. It's the E.T. of JRPGs.

ROFL!!! oh c'mon it wasnt that bad!!! ROFL!!

altogether Lost Odyssey sold a good 700,000 copies worldwide according to wiki, i'm re playing it right now just for kicks.

anyway back to the topic, yes they are growing out of existence and resistance is futile.

if square enix want a billion sales they better make a FF game that mimics fallout 3 and make it even better.

I'm sure someone else already stated this but I think a lot of the lower sales numbers were due to games coming out on the 360 instead of the PS3 for the first 2-3 years of this generation.

On consoles, yes. Games like Final Fantasy are actually to blame since they raise the bar impossibly high.

??? Almost all JRPG-Fans don't like FF13. It's a dumbed down JRPG for Casuals.

By the Way the Wii gets many interesting JRPGs in the near future, let's see how good they will be (Arc Rise Fantasia, Fragile Dreams, The Last Story, Xenoblade) and their sales.

The top selling RPGs this generation are from Japan. The Dragon Quest series has hit new heights in the last few years in terms of sales.

Wha? The top selling console RPG list this generation is completely dominated by western developers. I'm pretty sure that's what the OP is talking about (hence his mention of FF and LO).

Dragon Quest 9 - 4.22 million sold

Dragon Quest 6 DS 1.26M

Dragon Quest 5 DS 1.33M

Dragon Quest 4 DS - 1.38M

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker - 1.72M

Dragon Quest Rocket Slime - 420K

Now which Western RPG franchise has sold more than 10 million in the past few years? How many have exceeded 4.22 million? (and that's not even the top selling JRPG this gen).

EDIT: I don't mean for this post to read as conflictual as it may.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Yes, they need to evolve/adapt to current standards. More interactive worlds and having gameplay mechanics other than just battling/leveling up. Plus better realised NPCs/towns.

To say their dying may be too strong of a comment but they are loosing their popularity.

i don't think it's dying...just look at DS and Demon's souls.
