johnlucas I think it was me that posted that video on youtube, that also sold me on it too. Miyamato was talking about how the game industry was putting their weaker development teams on the Nintendo platforms, and that's why their sales weren't as strong as Nintendos. He sort of issued a challange. Saying let's see you put the top teams on the system and then see if you can beat us. He's right. But I'm hoping games like this start to change peoples impressions. If people start seeing gameplay is selling games over graphics(at least for some titles) the third parties we'll start to change their focus to some degree. Escpecially if the Wii continues to sell strong.
Thanks for that fooflexible! Totally enlightened me on that one. I looked at it like Scarface and thought GTA clone & dismissed it on sight. Being made by EA made me ignore it further. I just thought it was a cheap movie tie-in quickbucks kind of deal that would appeal to GTA & Godfather/gangster movie fans at best.
And that's exactly what it would have been if not for the Wiimote.
This might be the Wii's Goldeneye 007 of sorts!
I dig how Miyamoto is challenging game development.
I get tired of that whining that no one sells on Nintendo systems because Nintendo's too good & makes them look poor by comparison. That's weak!
Mega Man was FORMED BECAUSE of trying to match Nintendo's game design. Mega Man was inspired by Mario & AstroBoy & some other stuff. Back in the day we had it all. 1st party Nintendo powerhouses, 2nd party smashes, 3rd party blockbusters all on one system. That's why everybody looks back to the NES days with nostalgia. Look at YTMND NES sendups for God's sake!
Ninja Gaiden on NES, Castlevania, Contra, Dragon Quest/Warrior, The Technos legacy (Double Dragon, River City Ransom, Renegade), Ducktales & the Disney games, Final Fantasy 1-6, Chrono Trigger on SNES, Breath of Fire series, Final Fight, Ganbare Goemon/Mystical Ninja, Metal Gear, Ikari Warriors, Skate or Die, Blades of Steel, TMNT games, Super Spike V'Ball, Gradius/Life Force (Salamander), Blaster Master, Demon Sword on NES, Lufia, Bubble Bobble, Double Dribble, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Killer Instinct, R.C. Pro-Am, Battletoads, Earthworm Jim, Cool Spot, Comix Zone, Sonic the Hedgehog...
They stepped UP their game to be worthy & were rewarded for their efforts.
Anything less is a cop-out & shows that gaming has no future if no one's willing to pioneer & progress.
Miyamoto's trying to bring the whole industry up to par. Lazy games for the quick buck will always be around but somebody's gotta put together that Super Mario RPG/Chrono Trigger/Street Fighter II/Mortal Kombat/River City Ransom/Demon Sword/Ninja Gaiden NES level of game to keep this thing fresh & exciting.
Wii's gonna help some people step up their game & come up with something REALLY exciting for us. Nintendo will make new stars out of hungry new 3rd party neophyte teams just like what happened for Squaresoft long ago. Someone's willing to dig into this system and really see what it can produce And that my friends is the essence of old school gamedesign.
It makes money but it's motivated by the art of the game.
