I remember when the Wii was first launched, The bias people of the gaming community labeled the Wii and everything motion sensing a "FAD" with a limited life span, 4 Years later the Wii is way ahead of the mighty PS2 in timeline leaving it's competitors a long way behind.

hense the word "Long"

Now I'm a Multiformat gamer (aka no fanboy) but I do feel what Sony have done with "move" It's just embarrassing, how can Sony sleep with themselves at night knowing they copied the Wii's motion sensing feature. They should of just got paper and traced the Wii mote.

Wouldn't it of made more sense for all three consoles to focus on thier "Strengths" rather than their weaknesses?

The PS3 install base are mainly 18 - 35 year olds.... are they going to make the switch from Metal Gear to Basic Table Tennis?

Your thoughts?

Ok i wanted to respond to you and I wanted to do it before i read any post in this thread.

About the elite hardcore HD fan dissmising the Wii right off the bat: You're so right on the money. I was not around for the begining of this generation. I wish I was on vgchartz back then, was it around? I REALLY wish I had any kind of thread links or anything to any HD fan on this site, or anyother that labeled motion controls a "fad" so I would serve some crow now lol. Although to be totally fair I was worried about the Wii with motion controls after owning a Power Glove back in the day lol. But all the same I would never just right Nintendo off like that, I know better.

About Sony and the "Move": Its a very weak move for Sony, pun intended, but really can you blame them? There "strenths" are selling there console at huge losses and losing Billions. Thats not a good thing ya know. Sure gamers love it, they got an $800 system at launch for $600 and its a beast with a great library, well its great now anyways. But Sony needs that casual gamer, and im sorry to hurt any Sony fans feelings here but the PS2 was damn casual friendly. You need the casuals to be the market leader.

So I don't get the dissapointment part of it. It's a little embarrassing but people will forget all about that when there playing RE5 in HD with motion controls. And that goes for Nintendo's recent attacks on Sony. I really don't get it. I know you're worried now Nintendo. So heres an idea. Wii 2 with > HD > PSN tyep online service > A harddrive = Nintendo's best system yet.

Let generation 8 begin...Hmm if the PS3 goes 10 years and its going up against the Wii and Wii 2 is the PS3 generation 7 and 8? God damn you Sony you're ganna fuck everything up lol, but i digress.

Here's a little tidbit:

Under the heading "The Wii Fad Will Fade,"Insomniac Games chief creative officer Brian Hastings says that interest in the Wii won't last. Likening the Wii to "mainstream fads" such as Tickle Me Elmo and Furbies, he believes that the many nongamers who have helped the Wii become a sales success will eventually let their Wiis gather dust, as "mainstream fads usually run their course within a year."

Hastings does acknowledge that the Wii is "really, really fun" and that "Nintendo has innovated far more than any other company in the industry," but he believes that in the end, consumers will be drawn to "more graphically impressive games on the PS3 and Xbox 360" for their high-definition televisions."

A portion of a GamesIndustry interview with SCEA’s Scott Steinberg…

Q
: How do you feel PlayStation 3 is performing with regards to the new audiences that have come into gaming in the past couple of years? PS2 has done a pretty good job, but if people are to transition to PS3, what is there for the family and social audiences?

SS
: When it comes to social or family games, there’s no question we’ve got the Rock Bands and Guitar Heroes, and we’ve got third parties supporting us in those ways. We’re going to make a bigger push on Buzz! We’ve got some great ideas that we haven’t announced yet that we think will broaden the casual and social gaming market.

Q: You mentioned the Blu-ray remote, and one of Nintendo’s key successes has been the accessibility of controls - something that’s not daunting to non-native gamers. What are your thoughts on that area?

SS: …I think the notion of that controller is a non-trivial point that you’ve brought up, that control and that familiarity is like comfort food - from my perspective, we lead, we don’t follow. And as a brand, Nintendo’s got their thing, and we’re not trying to get the senior citizen group to get into gaming, we’re looking to convert the PS2 owners and the tens of millions of installed base that were playing DVDs and playing games on their PS2, to now play Blu-ray movies and Blu-ray games with their PS3.

…So we’re all about looking at ways to keep that bar high, and from a peripheral standpoint the Blu-ray remote helps people get in and out of their digital media, but we’d never consider iterating off of existing competitive technology - because we think that’s a fad and that’s not the way we approach product development. It’s not the way we approach the marketing or the branding of PlayStation.

Gold indeed...so much hypocrisy there it hurts...but at the same time it´s not surprising at all.

I'm tired of these threads, pure spam.
If you don't like the PS Move, don't buy it,and if you're a gamer, and not a fanboy, why do u care so much about it?Yeah, maybe Sony copied Nintendo,so what?Do u win some kind of prize if u flame on it?No,u're wasting ur time.

Technically, wouldn't all individual videogame systems qualify as fads? Except MAYBE the PS2.

I mean, they come out, are really popular for about 5 years... and by 10 years the userbase has shrunk WAY below it's previous high.

As for motion controls. Well we've still got a few years to go before you can say for sure it isn't a fad. Although usually fads are labeled in retrospect not while it's going on.

Well I disagree that Sony's strenghts is in the 18-35 male area. Although this seems to be the majority PS3 owner, usually this wasn't Sony's userbase. On PS1, PS2, and PSP I'd say the majority userbase is/was quite diverse. Was represented by Sony who had a wide range of titles for many ages and people, even some with the Eyetoy that is being "recast" now.

I do see it as obvious, that Sony has been influenced by Nintendo heavily in their approach with "Move", but I don't think the base they are going after is new territory. It's just they are trying to regain what they already had. And this might have a lot to do with their larger focus on a high-end machine rather than a gaming machine for everyone.

I still see the biggest problem facing Sony, is an identity for "Move" that is uniquely them. For a product so perceptibly similar to the Wii, they need the "Sony" part to show more than ever and I'm just not seeing them do that.

I agree that the previous Playstation consoles have appealed to a wider audience.

(I owned PS1 & PS2)

The problem with move is that..... It's a traced Wii mote, at least Natal has a slightly different way of the motion execution.

umm, no it's not :

@ joeorc

I'll rephrase the setence you quoted:

"The problem with move is that..... It's a Wii remote shameless imitation, at least Natal has a slightly different way of the motion execution. "

Better now?

Aye? ;D

I guess it's humorous..........they did insult the Wii and motion controls when it was earlier released and now they are back on the motion boat.......with controls similar to the Wiimote and Nunchuk. Well.......they can thank Nintendo for innovating motion controls and making it become a standard in gaming. Unlike what they couldn't do with the Eye Toy. Ah but competition is good, yes? They may be even better than the Wiimote/Nunchuk, yes? But this could end up just like Zune, still behind the original innovator.
