Forums - Sales - Demon's Souls sales...

That's surely japanese sales.

It fits with vgchartz numbers.
Also, based on Famitsu numbers, Demon's Souls sold 160k in 2009. And the best edition just came out in Japan and sold well.

I don't think what he said makes it overtracked.

250k world wide doesn't make sense, since the first month NPD and Japan (Famitsu) is already above 250k.

Japan numbers probably.. atleast thats what i get from reading the full article.

I thought that initially too, but upon checking JP trackers have it well below ~250k though... like 150-180k.

Shipped though.. dont you think? Closing in on 250k could be 220 for all we know. And its not that far from 180k. And the article talks about the JP scene and how some JP dude thought the game was niche, but was closing in on 250k. And later goes on to talk about localization problems. I still think its JP numbers.

Japanese retailers are overly cautious these days, and if you look at Famistu leaks, even 40k excess stock only seems to happen when games bomb.  Actually, going off what we know of DS, the original sold out completely (~160k) and the best version's sold ~22k so far (out of a ~30k shipment).

190k might be enough to be "closing in" though, yeah.  But still, 250k is a bit of a push from that.

60k in the west total doesn't make sense either though, that'd mean HUGE overtracking on NPDs part.

Demon's Souls has an Asian and Korean release which never appears on the Japanese trackers, yet was released at the same time as the Japanese game. That's where the discrepancy is, I'm sure. They were all released by SCEJ.

SCEJ doesn't handle Korea, but they do handle Hong Kong.  I guess JP+HK could work, as the KH was heavily imported due to being in english iirc.

It's probably all sales with SCE as the publisher (SCEJ, SCEK, or basically everywhere the game was released outside of North America).

I wouldn't be surprised if the game's Asian sales were unusually high given the number of importers. It's actually the only game I've ever imported, and sites like NCSX had trouble keeping it in stock months after release.

Jarrod, you might not know this (not being a PS3 gamer) but only the Japanese and some Asian versions of Demon's Souls are published/distributed by SCE. Atlus picked up the game for US release, otherwise it wouldn't have made it here. I don't think Sony would be bragging about Atlus' sales numbers, since companies generally only talk about their own sales numbers.*

* (And might need some kind of permission to talk about the sales numbers of another company which hasn't released the information yet.)

Basically, what Makingmusic said. How did I miss that post?

That article had a lot of enlightening information. Not only does Sony think Demon's Souls is a sleeper hit, implying it'll probably get a sequel, but they also realize it should've been published by SCE in the West, which bodes well for a sequel's success in the region.

Unfortunately, its unorthodox design and unrelenting difficulty caused Sony's U.S. and European arms to pass it up, assuming that it would be a failure outside of Japan. Instead, it was picked up for international release by Atlus; despite SCEJ's reluctance to license the game, they wanted Demon's Souls to carve a niche for itself outside Japan, and first-party avenues were closed.

"That was a mistake," Kim admits. "It should have come out as a first-party title."

Jesus Jarrod, post the good stuff!
