Forums - Nintendo - Just started playing Calling. First impressions.

Hi there,

Well, even if the reviews so far are not very positive, I decided to buy Calling.  What can I say, I just love horror games and so few of them are on the wii.  So, after finishing Silent Hill shattered memories (brilliant), Cursed Mountain (one of my favorite), Dead Space Extraction (Far too short) and House of the Dead Overkill (crazy), I will give this one a try.

The premise is promising enough.  A weird website is said to give you the possibility to talk to the dead.  Cool!  So, in the next few days, I will give Endless Ocean blue world a much needed rest to try it out.  I'll give you my impressions along the way.  And since I have played for about 20 minutes, here is my initial feeling.

Ok!  Well in terms of getting you into the story, I would say it's pretty basic.  Just plain text and no voice over at the beginning.  Ouch!  Moments after, you wake up in a room, not knowing where you are.  Ok!  Silent hill 4 anyone?  First thing I do, adjust the brightness.  Wow!  This game is dark.  Not to be played with lights on for sure.  Ok, let's continue...  Basic room searching.  Controls work fine, thank god.  Now, no more lights.  Power shortage.  Ok.  Gets you in the mood.  Now, cannot search anymore cause I missing some light.  From then on, since I don't want to spoil too much, I got out and had my first encounter with a ghost.  The sound it made, well, wasn't scary at all.  I'm more like: hum!  The graphics are also: hum!  But, it's just the first few minutes.  So, I'll give it a shot.

Sadly for it, I am already comparing it to Silent Hill Shattered Memories.  Let me tell you, the first chase sequence brought goose bumps to my arms.   Not so here.  Plus, cell phone here, cell phone SH.  Plus it seems flash light here, flash light SH.  I...got...to...stop comparing the two games.  Let's give this one a chance.

More on it later on!

Please share if you play this game also.

Never heard of this game myself. So far from your post their is a reason why

All right. I got to play an hour this afternoon, so here we go. First, let me tell you, SPOILER ALERT....SPOILER ALERT...SPOILER ALERT. But, the more I play the game, the more I think you should not care much...well, I'm getting ahead of myself.

So, after finishing the first section, here I am transported to an obscure school. The first room is great, it's a music class and it looks good. When I got out, I started exploring. Let me get this straight, I could only visit 4 corridors that looked almost exactly alike and some classrooms that looked, you guessed it, almost exactly alike.

To my surprise, the "portable phone" scares were good at pushing up the tension level. I got a couple of good visual scares on that floor before I was attacked, and attacked and attacked by a ghost. Fault of a better name, let's call her Chubby. She got into my face my friends, it was very annoying. I run, she appears and screams in my face. The problem, she is NOT scary at all. NO WAY JOSE. Anyway, I finally got a text message telling me where to go. I got to the bottom floor, filled with classrooms that look...you know...the same.

But, to my surprise, the stress factor was very high because of some good phone calls and sounds.

So, that's about it so far. I do want to play again tonight but this game is in now way as polished as Silent Hill Shattered Memories. But, it is growing on me. I shall see...

Well, just finished playing my second hour and please, stick with it. WOW! The second half of the school chapter is much more fun than the boring first half. Finally some new scenery and the story is starting to pick up. And yes, goosembumps! I was stuck only one puzzle and had to use a walkthrough. Other than that, sweaty palms at the end when using the cell phone. Good times. I sure hopes it stays that way.

Thanks for the impressions, nice to know that there is a bit of a silver lining. There's enough coming out that I probably won't get this game, but maybe I'll grab it later for cheap.

Never heard of this.........but now its on my radar.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Never heard of it...............but it seems to be calling me. ( no pun intended )

MY ZELDA COLLECTION

I want this game but... probably won't get it

I have been waiting to be able to buy and play this game since Summer 2009 as I like horror games but now I don't know if I will buy this game or not.

I(just like everyone in this world) can't buy every game because of my money limits so I have to pick a few games to get from now on and the Wii has a decent amount of good games coming soon and I don't know what the future holds either but I expect the Wii to have its best year ever. So the only game I got in 2010 so far was Endless Ocean Blue World and I only want to get 1 or 2 more games from now until June.(E3) So far the one's I am thinking of buying are:

Calling, Monster Hunter 3 Tri, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing and I only want to buy 1 or 2 of those 4 games.

Also thats just for 2010 as I might also back track and get: Silent Hill S.M, or The Conduit so that makes 6 games that I am thinking about buying. Also remember this is only until June(E3) so if the Wii doesn't have anything I like coming out for June-December 2010 then I may get some of the other games out of those 6 that I didn't get before June. Right now this is how much I want each game in order from most to least:

1.Super Mario Galaxy 2

2.Monster Hunter 3 Tri

3.Calling

4.Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing

5.Silent Hill S.M

6.The Conduit

As of now I won't be buying the Calling(At least not until later)
