Forums - PC - HDMI video/audio help needed

Ok, so I don't want to be bothered to create a new account on a new forum and I can't seem to find my answer elsewhere, so hopefully someone has already tackled these issues.

OS = Win7 64
Motherboard = Asus 785g/710 motherboard which is essentially some realtek HD/AC97 chip and a ATI 4200HD mobility graphics card

Audio) I have audio working over HDMI, but it only lets me "test" front L/R speakers. I'm plugged into a 7.1 receiver. Does windows support 7.1 over HDMI? I have an 8-channel integrated chip on the motherboard. If the only solution is running either a S/PDIF, or 8 analog cables, I'm fine with that, but I'd rather have everything through one cable.

Video) If I boot my PC before turning on my TV it won't output video over HDMI, and instead it defaults to some VGA controller. Is there any way to force HDMI output regardless? Right now if I boot in the wrong order I have to run to my other PC and VNC in.

I use an HDMI for my computer. windows 7 64 also. However I get video. But no sound what so ever. I mean the speakers if the monitor pop up as a choice. But no sound comes out. I didn't need to do anything special to get the video to work. It works no matter what turns on first. How odd that our problems are reversed. Lol Wish I could help. Maybe the answer you get can fix my audio problem. ;)

hmm do u have ati HDMI audio thing installed?  i am pretty sure there is as etting for 2.1 4.1 5.1 a7.1 audio channels

it's a driver it came with my vaio, and when update to win 7 the comp. disc also have it

I installed the realtek ATI HDMI Audio driver. I downloaded it from the website, but the install version doesn't seem to match the website version number, and the date says back in 09 compared to the website saying it was last updated in 2010. So I'm trying that again, to see if it helps.

As for the TV, I found that if I leave ATI's Catalyst program open with "auto detect displays while open" checked it will switch for me. I switched it back to "manually detect" and I'm going to try powering down and powering back to see if it stays with the same display. If not, at least I have a solution to one of my problems (granted, it isn't my favorite solution as it screws up my windows every time I turn off the TV)

@sharky

I had some problems with audio over HDMI at first. With an ATI card, you have to install the audio codec from Realtek's website before you install the HDMI video driver. You could try reinstalling the realtek drivers, but you may have to uninstall the other drivers first. Also, under the sound manager right click the background and select display disabled devices if you can't see the display, then set it as the default device.

Can't help you since your on PC.

Nord, unfortunately, you are running a 4200, and it is a piece of shit, so even if you are running on 1.3b cables, you won't get 7.1 audio, because, it's shit. So, just use the S/PDIF from the motherboard.

ps: and I love you, or something.

ps#2: forgot to mention that you need at least a 4600 series for actual HDMI goodness, just how it is.

It's for a low powered HTPC, so the 4200 fits the bill perfectly. Saved me $50 over buying some other card card and uses less energy in the long run. I can buy another S/PDIF cable for like $5, which is still cheaper so thats good.

Thanks for the info that it doesn't support 7.1. At least now I won't be wasting my time trying to get it working.

If you use some sort of converters from DVI to HDMI or something like that, you can't have audio for those that didnt work. For 7.1 on HDMI I really don't know but I wouldnt be suprised if it was only a driver setting :P

EDIT: Why dont you plug your speakers directly in your PC if you have a 7.1 capable sound card?

I understand, that's why I said just use the S/PDIF, glad to share the info. TBH though, a 4200 DxVA decoding might still have artifacts on full HD content but if you sit far enough away, it shouldn't be too noticeble. If you are using CPU decoding(assuming the CPU has enough power,) CoreAVC decoder usually does the best job, if you want to pay, or uh.... maybe not pay.... hehehe....
