Forums - Nintendo - So my Wii has arrived and I need some answers

1) don't buy one until after you fill the Wii's Internal memory. Then any cheap 1-2GB card should be more than sufficient. No reason to buy Wii brand. If you are talking about GC memory (which is needed for GC saving) then buy any Nintendo brand. 3rd parties tend to randomly erase everything they have :-O

2) anything made by Nintendo is gold. Looks like you like fighters, so if you have a bunch of friends to play with I suggest brawl from your list.

3) only buy what you actually need. I bought 3 extra Remotes + Nunchucks as soon as I could and I regret it. I should have bought 3 extra remotes, and only 1 extra nunchuck. I never use the last two nunchucks. If you play brawl a classic controller or GC is recommended but not needed. Classic controller is the best option for VC games, as the GC has an odd button layout.

So if you are on a tight budget, just wait until you realize you actually need it. No need to buy everything ahead of time.

4) you can buy component cables online for like $5. Well worth the price if you have a HDTV.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

get a 2 gig sd card (15 bucks?)

component cables if you are using a hd tv

a wavebird/GC controller if you can find one..or a classic controller if not

metroid trilogy, galaxy, nsmbwii, brawl, Zelda, ME:reflex are all great   and many more im sure could be suggested

Lostwinds:wotm, world of goo etc

Yeah no need to go overboard w/ controllers, unless you're planning on having frequent visitors over to play it. Those things are damn pricey. I got mine on launch and I still only have 2 wiimotes and 2 nunchucks, plus I have a wavebird and a classic controller. That's really all I need. Most of my friends own the console anyway so they just bring their own controllers.

Thanks for all the help. I am thinking about waiting till Friday (Gamestop weekly ad) to pick up some more games

Just want to play good games

1. Dont buy Memory Card. The Wii HD (^_^) doesn't need it.
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Pro Classic Controller mostly for VC games.
4. Also, you can buy Zelda: Twilight Princess

Memory card is for GC games. If you plan on buying a bunch of GC games get the 1019 one on Amazon (unless stores still carry it). If not get the 251 one. I'd recommend the classic controller and a GC controller for GC games.

Do *not* buy the 1019, unless you want a ticking time bomb that is going to corrupt. On the GameCube it's reliable enough, but when used on a Wii their days are numbered.

And start with Super Mario Galaxy. It's far and away the most awe-inspiring game on the platform.

Apparently not mine...

How long so far? I had one that i used from Wii's launch that panned out December 08, but i know it's not just me.

Still, it's not worth the risk.

I've had my Wii for 3 years and my memory card for nearly 6. I don't leave my memory card in the Wii when I'm done though.

That's why i guess. Mine had over 2 years of almost constant heat working against it...

Loving the experience  so far with Wii Sports Resort (3 pt contest is my fav right now) but I am headed out later today and I need to know what I need to buy.

What memory card is recommended?

What Nintendo 1st party should I start with first (SMG, NSMB or Brawl)?

What controllers do you you guys recommend?

Also any other info is greatly appreciated

Everything depends on what you want more than anything.

What memory card is recommended?
If you want to play GameCube games you will need a GameCube memory card (size dpending on how many games... the 59 will be ok for 5-10 games [depends on the games as to how much space they take].... I would suggest Nintendo brand over anything else)
If you mean an SD card.... you shouldn't need one immediately, you will only need one when you start buying a number of Virtual Console/Wiiware games..... I personally have all the available free Wii channels (like internet browser etc) as well as all my game saves (22 Wii games, 9 Wiiware and 10 VC, again different games take up different space though) as well the Mario Kart Channel (some games come with channels you can optionally add to the Wii menu) all of it fits easily on the Wii's internal memory, and I still have space left for a large Wiiware/VC game. Then my actual downloaded games are on the SD card I have.
For gaming purposes you will not fill up even a 1GB card unless you buy a huge number of Wiiware/VC games... but you can store photos and music as well I suppose, (but so few games support music playback there is little point, and photos are only useful in the photo channel) as such buying more than a 2GB card is probbaly overkill.

What Nintendo 1st party should I start with first (SMG, NSMB or Brawl)?
Out of those three I would say Galaxy... but I haven't played the other two (nor do I have any intention to).... if you like fighting games [I don't] then Brawl seems to be an excellent choice because it gets a lot of playtime from those that own it.
If I can choose you one myself, I would say Mario Kart Wii

What controllers do you you guys recommend?
Again this depends.... how many people are likely to be playing on it regularly, what games are you (and the others) into etc.
I get along just fine with 3 Wii remotes, 2 nunchucks and a motion+.... If you will be regularly playing lots of multiplayer you may want to extend it to 4 Wii remotes. Everything else is optional depending on which games you enjoy.... perhaps you want a balance board, perhaps you need 2, or 4 Motion+ attachments because of Wii Sports resort... perhaps 4 nunchucks (though games that need 4 of them are rare... my only one is SSX Blur I think, Mario kart may support 4 players using nunchucks but I usually mix and match controllers for it (3 wii remotes and a GC controller).

If you plan on playing lots of virtual console games, or for games like SSBB you may also want a Classic controller (I don't have one myself... a GameCube controller suffices for most purposes) while for GameCube games you cannot play without a GC controller.

Also any other info is greatly appreciated

So, checklist:
Wii & remote & nunchuck & Motion+ (check)
extra remotes as required
extra nunchucks (probably be fine with just 2 in most cases)
Gamecube contollers and memory card?
Classic controller?
Possible SD card... and if you think you need one of these then you should also be buying Wii points as well.
