Forums - Microsoft - Mass Effect and Halo hate

Sigh. Let me take the side of the anti-hyped games, and such.

I think with any game, it comes down to a few sensibilities about a given game:

With an ultra-highly rated, revolutionary game in a given genre that someone loves (ie, a WRPG fan being madly in love with Mass Effect, or a FPS person liking Halo 3 and Bioshock), we have come to have a deep-rooted respect for the given game.

So when someone dissents out of personal opinion, it attacks our strong feelings about our enjoyment of a game. Millions of people spend vastly more time on Halo 3 than probably every single Wii game combined around the world. Yet despite that, Halo 3 isn't the be-all end-all of games. It has it's flaws, but also has a great multiplayer environment. However, not everyone likes that.

Mass Effect is the same way. It has a ton of shooter elements in it. Approaching Mass Effect, I have always been leary of the idea of adding too much TPS elements, and muddying the waters of what a quality RPG is. Now, in my case, I'm trying to get beyond that (ie, an elongated Gears of War with quests). However, for some, they cannot get beyond that, as it stabs their beloved Final Fantasy, and such in the back.

I've experienced something just as heinous: all the Blue Dragon bashing. It's a near-flawless gem of a Japanese RPG. Nearly perfect in every way, backed by a rabid fanbase of owners that realize how truely awesome this RPG is. Despite this, it's had bad reviews (77% avg), and alot of stupid bashing from these forums. Does it make me mad? Of course it does, expecially when idiots attack it that don't realize that they're missing out on a Dragon Quest and/or Final Fantasy-level RPG.

But then I realize: it really shouldn't matter what other's think. The people that bash these games DO NOT OWN A 360. Not only that, they'll never buy one: they're too stupid to do that. Because of that, I can't worry. They are just going to have to miss out on the fantastic library of games that they'd probably love if they got off their N-tard or Sonyfan rockers, and tried the library. Likewise, I am sure I miss a few great Wii games with my bias to the X360.

That's just life. Get over it. The X360, from reviewers, is the king of quality gaming. If the 60% of people on this forum that consider the Wii the best system of the next gen's + handhelds want to ignore and bash the X360, that's fine. I'm the one laughing because I haven't had a video game drought since the X360 launched. They have had to trudge through crap game after crap game thrown at them.

So in the end, I smile. I get Mass Effect, they don't. And that's the sweetest victory: denying your enemy a chance to enjoy themselves as they play Mario Party 8 and their Boogie-esque games while I enjoy Sakaguchi and Mass Effect.

Wow well said. That should be published

I'm somewhat new to gaming, but it just seems that in every website Mass Effect has got a good review. Yet most of the people that go to these sites seem to be looking for it to be a bad review, even though Bioware, and Bugie for that matter seem to have almost never put out a bad product, based on what I've seen on there track records. I know that just not liking a certain type of game based on opinion is a small part of it, but it just seem so clockwork.

Please discuss with me, What's with all the hate?!? If these posters were true gamers, why not be happy and get these good games.

Please don't burn me (It's my first topic).

for Halo... it's because everybody is sick of hearing how Halo is some amazing game that does everything right and if God were to come to earth this is what he'd buy. It's just not true, Halo is a competent game but it isn't the savior of everything it isn't some blessing that all us gamers wait anxiously for.

Speak for yourself...there are over 5 million people who disagree with every last word in your post.

Changing channels with my voice: priceless!!!

Speaks for 'your'self WEW, just because someone bought the game doesn't mean they hold it in as high a regard as those we are talking about do.

I've been looking for dirt on Mass Effect...
My expectations are so high that I know theres no way it could possibly meet them...

So I'm trying to lower them as much as possible!

I have never played either one, but I will tell you this ... I have no opinion on the matter.

Well lets be clear there is a difference between folks who don't recognize that something is a good game and folks who see why people think it is a good game and don't like it despite that.

For example, first time I noticed Mass Effect was a trailer, after watching the trailer and without knowing who was making it I thought "this looks like a graphically spiffed up, yet shitty version of kotor".  Since then I have watched countless videos and I can see where people are exited about the branching dialogue the storyline, and in some respects the gameplay.  But for me the branching dialogue is only important if the story is intriguing, and the story sounds like something taken from the pages of a "Make'A'Sci-Fi'Show" Handbook and the combat looks ..well to be blunt godawful. To be honest I can handle the story because I enjoy sci-fi and I am able to look past its cheesier faults, but the combat I have seen is very offputting for me. For a long period of time I actually refrained from commenting on the game because my opinion was just fundamentally different from everyone else who was talking about it.  But just because I have that opinion of the game doesn't make me a hater or a fanboy.

The same is probably true of the Halo series, I played through the beginning of the campaign on a friends xbox and though it was a subpar shooter at best (most likely because I was into PC shooters).  I eventually spent quite a bit of time playing the game with friends but never was compelled to buy the game or console.  I still think of halo as a mediocre shooter and if anything I get hate from other people (just watch I will get some for this post) for having that opinion.  But I do think it was an important step to bringing console shooters up to a new level and closing the gap between PC shooters. The series has its strengths, I have no problem recognizing that, but the overall package has never really reached out and grabbed me and if anything has pushed me away.

Uncharted is similar right now, it does have an interesting story but people are very hyped on its graphics, yet all of the shots I have seen look like refried crap (if anyone has good shots please PM/post them) and I don't know what to think of the game with reviewers saying that it is relatively short and has good graphics. Are they right on both? wrong on one, right on the other?  wrong on both? I will likely still try the game some time down the road, especially if I get a PS3, but but the disparity between what is being said and what I am seeing gives me doubts.  I hope it turns out to be a good game because as I said I am interested in the story, but if it looks like crap or is short, then I am going to hold that against it...and thats not being a fanboy or a hater...thats just being honest.

So as long as we are making broad sweeping generalizations, how about I make one of my own:

People who complain about Halo/Uncharted/Mass Effect haters are just blinded by their own fanboy love and can't bring their heads out of the clouds to recognize the faults in the game.  They react to people who do see these faults with disbelief and attempts to generalize them as just being haters hating.

Now that we are done with that, how about we realise that ALL people, not just fanboys or haters are guilty of these generalizations at some point and playing this game where people think they are Sigmund Freud and can analyze the psyche of other posters based on a few posts are full of it.

I obviously also missed the part where all Nintendo games have a bad story! Perhaps you only played Mario because there are plenty of story driven games made by Nintendo (Zelda, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Paper Mario). You've of course, probably never played these games because you don't like Nintendo games. Good for you. It's still closed minded.

The Gamecube I own and the N64 I did own say different.  I gave Nintendo's games a chance, I loved them a lot during the NES era but I grew up and my tastes changed.  And I stand by my statement about poor storylines, it's basically Nintendo's biggest weakness when it comes to games.  There's a reason why there're no decent movies based on Nintendo's games and why Hollywood isn't trying to get the film rights to their games when they're released.

Way to only respond to half of my post. I will sit here and say that many of nintendo's games have weak stories. Why don't you then play Nintendo's more story driven games? Metroid, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Nintendo has them. They're not exactly Bioware quality stories, but if your profile actually had a list of the games you own then I'm sure I could find many games on there with stories of worse quality.

I do understand that Nintendo does have a weak point when it comes to stories, but simply discounting all of their games based on this is incredibly closed-minded. I understand that EA has a habit of releasing buggy and half-finished games but I will say the same thing about them. Anyone who says "they don't like EA games" is just being closed minded.

And saying that there are no decent movies based off Nintendo games is just patently unfair. There has never been a decent movie made from any game ever. Those games with fantastic sotrylines (Baldur's Gate, Half-Life, Homeworld, etc) have never been made into a movie. What do we see instead? Doom. Obviously in your opinion, having fiml rights to a game must mean the story is supreme quality. Give me a break.

I'm sorry, but I seem to be sensing a case of video game snobbery over here. You enjoy your Mass Effect, your Halo 3, your Blue Dragon. You're more than welcome to. I don't think you need to say that I am "too stupid to buy an Xbox360". In fact, I prefer to think I'm too smart to buy an Xbox360, Because I'm not interested in spending $560 for it when I'm only interested in two games for it, (one of which is getting released for PC).

There seems to be this strange idea that people (such as myself) dislike these games because they are on the 360. That I really want to play this game but for some unknown reason, I have too much Nintendo fandom that I cannot go out and purchase an Xbox 360 to play them, so I must convince myself I don't want them. Nothing is further from the truth. I am simply not interested in Blue Dragon. I am not interested in Gears of War. I am not interested in Halo 3. And it is because of this disinterest that I do not own an Xbox 360. It's as simple as that.

So enjoy your games, and I'll enjoy mine. Don't think I'd be happy with the "king of quality gaming". Don't think I'm disappointed by the Wii's software drought, because from my viewpoint, the PS3 and 360 have had much worse software droughts. And don't call me stupid for not agreeing with you.
