Actually, I enjoyed the second game much more than the first one.
It made more sense in the mythological context of the ancient greek mythology. Whenever a god gained too much power, or favored a faction of humans over other, it would cause a stir or a revolution in Olympus. Just look at the punishment that Zeus gave to Prometheus when he gave the knowledge of fire and science to humanity.
So Kratos favoring Sparta and destroying pretty much every enemy that he saw fit, caused an unbalance that Olympus and Zeus couldn't bear. Plus, him not being an actual god, but a Demi-god promoted to god (the gods were all brothers, sons of the Titans or from Zeus or other gods between goddesses), played in a large role of him not having a second chance to redeem himself.
So having been betrayed by the gods twice, once by Ares and another time by the entirity of Olympus (except Athena), just fueled his rage beyond the limits of the first game. The final nail in the coffin of his hate for Olympus was struck when he killed Athena while she tried to protect her father, Zeus.
So yeah, it makes much more sense and has much more scope and integration into a normal greek mythology story than the first one xD
