I guess I also disagree because I did not run into the same issues. It all flowed for me. I haven't bothered reading through the chapter datalogs, but I have read all of the others. I find them very interesting.

i agree when i read the reviews i was like meh at the very linear part but after playing it its HORRIBLY linear there is nowhere to go but in a straight line

Preference of plot device then! I as I said previously, gameplay is very addictive after you get over the very long ass prologue. And good news, my friend just told me the story does get better! |
I'm quoting the wrong post here, but mibuo, there's more coherance in the first 10 minutes of this game than there is in the entire star ocean 4 game.
You just need to pay attention.

Furniture salesman!
I am actually quite enjoying it. The first couple of hours as you say were a bit of a grind, seemed a bit pointless, the whole area made little sense etc.. the thing i could not get was why they had 2 things with very similar name i.e the L'ic etc.. that was major confusing.
But beyond that first zone the game starts to get good and is nowhere near as bad as the reviews have been making out in my opinion. There are annoyances (like the grunting noises every 5secs) but this is a FF game, i don't see anything different in it.
So thus far really enjoying it.
Every time Vanille opens her mouth, somewhere a kitty is strangled. Not just the voice acting (but it is horrible), the things she says are equally bad.
Gameplay is fun (obviously still a bit limited because I'm not far in), story is good so far (chapter 5), Characters are horrible. Snow is a pedo.
Edit: Scrap the characters are horrible comment, Token black guy is awesome :)

I actually like Vanille's voice. I don't see what's wrong with it (but then again, I LOVE Lymle's voice even though it seems everyone hates hers...). The only person right now that I hate is Snow. He looks cool and his voice suits him, but I don't like his personality at all.
But other than than me finding the beginning sequence slightly boring, I like this game so far.
EDIT: Okay, now that I'm a little further into the game, I'm disliking Hope too. He's pretty irritating. But I still like Vanille.
I like mostly everything so far. And i don't find much wrong with vanille. Also yeah the story is great to me so far i like stories that are broken into multiple pieces between cast members and then comes together in a aaaawww moment sort of way. Also the data logs definitely help if your confused.
That happens with most games, they just couldn't play it more.

I can even understand why they did it this way too, as SE successfully created an entire damn world full of alien concept and alien words that leaves the average gamer scratching his head in confusion. How do you cram that much lore into the beginning of the story for it to make more sense yet at the same time produce a playable -enjoyable- game? I don't know to be honest, but it's certainly not how FFXIII has done it. The disjointed story is compounded a mediocre caste. There's Hope 'the whiny the bitch' and Vanille 'the voice that can drive the enemy to commit suicide' (Seriously if I had to listen to that voice all the time I'd stab myself as a mean of escape). There's Snow the hero (aka the thoroughly unlikable paedophile), Miss dark mysterious emo and the token black guy (who incidentally has probably the best voice acting and also the best line so far in the game). So a disjointed and confusing story with a caste of character that is tolerable at best (and move into unlikable at worst) leaves me with no ability to empathise or sympathise with anyone or anything. This my friend is called disconnection, and its a nasty nasty shock coming from a fan of the series that was spellbound by VIII and mesmerised by X. From review comment, I KNOW that it will get better and to be honest, at least part of the problem is probably my own mind providing me with rose tinted memories of past Final Fantasies that I still cherish to this day. |
8 and 10... two of the very worst of the FF series... maybe I should pass this game up even for a rental
