Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Slim 360 - Wouldn't it make sense?

I would definitely buy a 360 slim in black with better dvd drive and low noise fan!
Hope MS brings us a better console...

no it wouldn't make any sense. you people seem to forget Sony has done the slim for every single gaming machine they put out.

Ps1 had a slim, ps2 had a slim and those lead the market with a gap bigger than the wii's total sales. so they need to have price cuts and a redesign to huh?

ps3 slim was a "duh, shit was bound to happen" moment.

all M$ need is a price cut. a slim would be just as blatant a rip-off as Sony's motion dildos.

Points to consider, reasons for PS3 sale increase.

$100 price cut.
Food of kick ass exclusive games.
Sony's 1st party was in the process established superiority over comp.
Yes smaller hardware.

To be honest, I don't see any reason why this exact scenario couldn't apply to Microsoft this fall with a 360 slim.  Price it at $199 with a 120GB HDD (and maybe even Natal) and it'll fly off the shelves with the lineup 360 has for 2010, including console exclusives like Halo Reach, Fable III, Portal 2, Crackdown 2, Monster Hunter Frontier, Alan Wake, Metro 2033, Spilnter Cell Conviction, Mass Effect 2, Kingdom Under Fire II, etc.

A 360 slim also brings the benefit of improving Microsoft's damaged reputation from RROD, as massmarket consumers will see it as a "new" more reliable 360.  And like with PS3 slim, you'll also get a lot of previous owners upgrading and quickly inflating that installed base figure.

A slimmed down xbox 360 is not part of microsoft's business philosphy. According to aaron greenberg.

I would look into getting one but I question how they would do it. The power supply is already removed from the case. Plus you would need a way to integrate the old HDDs.

Actually if anything, they should use the extra space in the 360 to put the power supply into the case. Especially if they get the smaller chipsets in there and are much cooler.

Nice last line. But unfortunately calling sony's motion control a ripoff or a copy of the wii remote is not entirely accurate.

MS will redesign and it will be easy.

1. Have you seen the empty space in the 360?
2. They have thousands of engineers.
3. The hard drive could be placed at a different location such as on top.
4. They may just make it shorter (when oriented vertically) and keep the hard drive the same location (this would be easy).
5. The 45nm combined cpu/gpu chip aka valhalla should be ready by fall 2010 drastically reducing power needs and cooling needs.

So yeah, it should be easy.

While I agree with the majority of your points. Wouldnt the majority of those engineers they have, like 95% of them, be software engineers?

Yeah, it's only mostly accurate.  ;)

Business as usual for Sony though really, their controller design has almost always taken it's lead from what Nintendo does.

Keep in mind that just because the idea and concept of sony's motion control works similarly to the wii remote doesn't mean that they copied nintendo with the wand. The idea of using "motion control" with one to one functionality has already been done before. If you look back at sony 3e 2005, you would see that they used different coloured cups to pick up water in the duck demo with a standard playstation eye component to track the cup. tracking seemed as laggy as natal, but still motion control.

Heck if you look back even further, they made a demonstration of the eyetoy's motion capabilities including the wand but in a form of a stick with a ball on top.

I'm sorry, but the one hand wand concept is pretty blatantly taking after Wii's (overwhelmingly successful) design and implementation.   It's like the SNES/PSX controller all over again.
