To be honest, I don't see any reason why this exact scenario couldn't apply to Microsoft this fall with a 360 slim. Price it at $199 with a 120GB HDD (and maybe even Natal) and it'll fly off the shelves with the lineup 360 has for 2010, including console exclusives like Halo Reach, Fable III, Portal 2, Crackdown 2, Monster Hunter Frontier, Alan Wake, Metro 2033, Spilnter Cell Conviction, Mass Effect 2, Kingdom Under Fire II, etc.
A 360 slim also brings the benefit of improving Microsoft's damaged reputation from RROD, as massmarket consumers will see it as a "new" more reliable 360. And like with PS3 slim, you'll also get a lot of previous owners upgrading and quickly inflating that installed base figure.
