Forums - Sony - Sony to Launch Challengers to IPhone and IPad

Sources have told the Wall Street Journal that Sony is planning on making a challenger to Apple’s iPad that will have all the capabilities of a netbook, a Sony Reader and a PSP, the company's handheld gaming device.

At a Sony news conference in Tokyo, Sony’s CFO Nobuyuki Oneda didn’t provide any details but expressed the company’s desire to compete against Apple’s newest gadget, due in stores next month.

"That is a market we are also very interested in. We are confident we have the skills to create a [great] product," said Oneda. "Time-wise, we are a little behind the iPad but it's a space we would like to be an active player in.”

The WSJ also reported Sony is making a new smartphone - containing Sony Ericsson mobile technology and capable of playing PSP games - to compete against the iPhone. Both devices are expected to work with Sony Online Services, an online store due to launch in March and sell music, movies, books, and other downloadable applications for mobile products.

The iPad challenger and the new smartphone are expected to launch sometime in 2010, but no details about specs, price or design have been released.

Sony has tried to get into the phone/gaming gadget arena in the past. A patent was filed in 2006 for a device that looked like a PSP on one side and a smartphone on the other, but such a device has never hit the market.

Apple sold 8.7 million iPhones in the last three months of 2009. The company announced Friday that the iPad will be available April 3.

So guys, what do you think? A phone that can play PSP games, and a netbook/reader that can also play PSP games. Pretty sick huh :) And another thing, remember that announcement Sony had made before? The one about extending the PSN to a whole host of Sony devices. Yeah, me thinks that these devices are gonna have access to the PS network. ( improper grammer intended ) Hopefully, they will give us more information about these two devices and the status of the new extended premium service instead of little tid bits of info. But hey they do what they gotta do. So forum, what are your thoughts and expectations regarding these two devices?

I hope it will be for my service provider apple was stupid to limiting the iphone just to at&t, hope sony doesn't make the same mistake.

PSPGo2XLPad then.

Mmm I like the sound of this, to me the iPad is an over sized iPhone. If they give us a nice device which can act as a reader, online connectivity with full PSN access with a stylish XMB and all the rest I would be it the very first day :) one day we will be able to connect all our Sony devices! That is why I love their products.

They better get on with it! My contract expires in September, so this new wonder phone better be out by then, or else I am going with their other iPhone beater, the X10

Say hello to pspPHONE!

PSPad Confirmed!

4 ≈ One

I like the direction Sony seem to be heading at the minute with a clear emphasis on product interactivity and connection. I'm fairly sure we'll soon be seeing things like Sony cameras and camcorders which will stream photos and movies directly to your PS3 hard drive to be viewed later at home or accessed any where in the world using your PSP pad or phone remote play ability. You'll be able to use your pad/phone to log onto your PS3 and play any PS1 games, stream a movie, watch music videos or TV shows from Play TV ect (made much easier through Sonys ownership of music and film studios).

This is also why the PlayStation brand is going no where anytime soon, it's far too important to their long term business strategy if they continue to focus on product interactivity.

They have a new ericsson phone that seems to "look" like the better buy over the iphone .. but... idk
