Forums - Gaming - Why I absolutely hate Chrono Cross and think it's the worst game in history

I borrowed a PS1 from a friend just to play the remake of Chrono Trigger just to see the stupid new cutscenes (which all sucked), and it took twice as long to beat as the SNES version due to new loading times before and after every single fight in the whole damn game.

Then I borrowed Chrono Cross, and I played even past the stupid part where you switch bodies with the bad guy, and got to "You must find 7 magical dragons blah blah blah." I found the first dragon and he said "I am the boss dragon. You must go find the other 6 then come back to me." I turned that shit off and never touched it again. It's probably the stupidest game I've ever played aside from the first Resident Evil. The characters were all stupid and 1-dimensional, like "I'm a cactus" "I'm a doll" "I'm a pirate" "I'm a girl" "I'm a kid" "I'm a furry" "I'm some emo everyman protagonist." I realized I didn't care about a single character or action or decision in the game, and when it made me make stupid decisions it was insulting my intelligence.

No, it is THE WORST GAME EVER CREATED IN ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY in my opinion. Worst storytelling in a video game ever created.

If you're not gonna bother to read why I think so then you have no right to say you have an opinion on this matter or say anything good about Chrono Cross because by ignoring my reasons you ignore my opinion, so I'll give you the same disrespect.

Believe me,  There is far worse in storytelling that CC.

Funny thing Ghost of RubangB, I thought CC was pretty great and Out of this world was the biggest piece of shit I played in the early 90s. As for Phoenixking's rambling diatribe, well, there's no accounting for taste.

Like Squaresoft said: "Chrono Cross is not a sequel of Chrono Trigger". Thanks God.

CC is DISGUSTING. One of the worts RPGs from Square.

No, E.T. just gets blamed for the Video game fall which was caused by idiotic companies who didn't stop producing constantly and mismanaging their money.

Everyone just blames E.T. because it was the "latest" in popular video games coming out at the time but the fact remains had E.T. even been successful than the fall would have still happened.

E.T. never claimed to be the best game ever. Chrono Cross's designers SPECIFICALLY said it would be the best game ever and I found it laughable with such a poor quality story with one-dimensional characters and plot riddled with so many holes and inconsistencies even in its most basic of storyline settings that I find the entire ascertian laughable.

For those who don't know:

The worst game ever, Chrono Cross, is still being sold because it never sold that many copies.

I've explained in detail why this game is the worst game ever created. Try actually reading the material on the front page instead of posting your opinion like you're always right about everything, at least when I do it, I have the facts.

Give it up buddy.  Many companies have claimed their game is the 'best game ever'.  From Nintendo with Twilight Princess to Rockstar with GTA IV to Bungie with Halo 3 and most recently with SquareEnix and Final Fantasy XIII.  Its just a PR stunt to hype a game.  And guess what.  Many review sites AND fans still gave it high marks.  Not that I trust review sites, but when a company can boast like that AND no one calls them on it, then you know they probably made a product that was pretty popular with 'core' gamers.

Did it sell 5 million copies?  No.  Has any JRPG outside of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest?  No.  So sales = good game?  No.  End of story.

I don't know about the other two games but I can tell you for a fact that Bungie never said Halo 3 was going to be the best game ever. Only an arrogant developer would ever say that, most good developers keep their mouths shut.

I'm not going to knock anyone for not liking Chrono Cross, but I personally loved the game. It's one of the better games I've played since Kingdom Hearts 2 and to be frank I'm glad I played it to remind me what JRPGs used to be about. My biggest problem is that the game's ending was rushed and never finished. And I don't know why people can't admit to it being a sequel to Chrono Trigger. Schala was in it. Lavos was the end boss, who happened to have been merged with Schala'. The dragon's were direct decendants of the Reptile species. The future destroyed by Lavos is in the game; it's a playable part. Lucca raised Schala. Chrono and Marle were in the game. I don't even know how you people can not call it a sequel. But I can understand some people not liking it's story as it's a bit convoluted and I had to read up on some things; but the gameplay was solid.

Actually... just found this:

3. It is getting to the point where RPG games are beginning to resemble each other way too much. Do you think it is getting harder to be innovative when developing a game for this genre? What steps do you take to ensure that you're not just rehashing the same thing over and over?

To say the least, the titles we've worked on have been innovative, and I would like to continue this trend for our future projects. When creating a series, one method is to carry over a basic system, improving upon it as the series progresses, but our stance has been to create a completely new and different world from the ground up, and to restructure the former style. Therefore, Chrono Cross is not a sequel to Chrono Trigger. Had it been, it would have been called "Chrono Trigger 2." Our main objective for Chrono Cross was to share a little bit of the Chrono Trigger worldview, while creating a completely different game as a means of providing new entertainment to the player. This is mainly due to the transition in platform generation from the SNES to the PS. The method I mentioned above, about improving upon a basic system, has inefficiencies, in that it's impossible to maximize the console's performance as the console continues to make improvements in leaps and bounds. Although essentially an RPG, at its core, it is a computer game, and I believe that games should be expressed with a close connection to the console's performance. Therefore, in regards to game development, our goal has always been to "express the game utilizing the maximum performance of the console at that time." I strongly believe that anything created in this way will continue to be innovative

4. With Chrono Trigger (for SNES) considered a classic by many RPG players, was there a concern that not many references to the original are present in Chrono Cross? Were you concerned that you might alienate loyal fans of the original?

As I mentioned before, Chrono Cross is not a sequel to Chrono Trigger, so I'm not worried. Of course, the fans of the original are very important, but what innovation can come about when you're bound to the past? I believe that gameplay should evolve with the hardware. On a different note, the original scenario writer for Chrono Trigger, Masato Kato, worked on Chrono Cross's scenario as well, but actually, there's another game he worked on, called "Radical Dreamers," which was released between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. This was an adventure game released on the Super Famicom online gaming system called the Satellaview. Radical Dreamers served as the bridge between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Gamers who have played all three games can probably figure out the connection, but since the media itself was so unique, I don't think many players know about it. As a result, we had to make sure players could play Chrono Cross without being too conscious of its connection to Chrono Trigger. This is why we have the title "Chrono Cross" instead of "Chrono Trigger 2."

Same here.  Its 5th on my top 5 RPGS for the PS1.

While there were some similarities between the two (as you said), it was the differences that made me enjoy it the most.

All this talk about Chrono Cross is making me want to play it again.

And you know, the things people hardly ever bring up about the game are how it was genuinely fun and had a lot of good points aside fro mthe 'story'.  While everyone is so hell bent on hating it for its 'story', you forget that its still just a game, and quite a fun game at that.  With one really fun battle engine, good exploration and, for a PSX RPG, good graphics that compliment the world and make exploring fun.

But if you're just going to let a few flaws in the story kill the entire game for you, then oh well, that's your problem.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

For me it's one of if not THE best JRPG I've ever played. Also, it hands down has the best soundtrack to any game ever. Sure, it suffers from poor writing, but all JRPGs do. Chrono Trigger included.
