Forums - Gaming Discussion - How much do trophies and achievements matter to you?

I used to be obsessed, but it was kind of pointless. On one side, it's cool because it may force you to play the game in a way you normally wouldn't, which can add value to the game, and you can end up enjoying it more because of it. But, overall, it's a waste of time.

Also, I never cared about my score, just getting everything I could out of a game, so getting 100%. I didn't feel I finished the game until I did that, which is ridiculous.

It would be different if there was a better system in place, but the current system is abused. You have games like Avatar: The Last Airbender that the achievements are just pointless for. Then you have games where the achievements take so long, you might as well sell all your other game.

There's a difference between skill based achievements and time based achievements. Sure, after time you can probably get anything, but you shouldn't have to play the same game everyday for months just to get everything.

These days though, with the exception of some of my steam games that I play a lot, I completely ignore achievements. It's not worth the time to deal with them, and many of them are just pointless and frustrating.

Xbox achievements are still cool but dont have the luster it used to have. It's still nice to see it. Trophies on PSN are lackluster to tell you the truth and I really don't have the time in the day to go get a platinum trophy.

They are pointless. The only thing you get is the right to brag about having no life outside gaming

It always cracks me up when someone says something about one group of people don't have a life for liking whatever but then they forget they're the one on the internet gaming forum.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

I still can't get my head around people saying trophies are inferior to achievements when they are essentially the EXACT same thing, you do A and something pops up on screen, the end...notice how the ambigous explaination can apply to both things, so how are they different?

I think they're nifty. I don't really brag about them but they can be useful.

For example, Lost Odyssey gives you an achievement when everytime you learn every special ability that any character can learn. That what useful to know for how how I wanted to play the game, which was a lot of grinding the party members that I wanted to super high levels and learning the best moves from other characters.

In Dragon Age you get one for dealing a certain amount of damage in one hit. This useful because it let me know how high my damage can be and got me thinking about how to spec to get that.

I like when they clue you in to the upper boundaries of what's possible with the game. That makes them nifty to me, but not crucial. I rarely go out of my way to get achievements and I prefer the ones that you'd naturally get from taking your play to a higher level rather than just fumbling through the game. I would never play a game that I didn't enjoy just to get an achievement though. That ruins the whole point of even playing games imo.

Achievements are essential!  There are multiple reasons that I am an achievement whore.

1. Gamerscore = bragging rights

2. Achievements help measure completion of a game

3. Some clever achievments actually change the way I'd play a game

4. Closing out a game has a whole new meaning and is much more definitive

5. After gaining 50 points in one day, it's usually a good sign that I played enough that day :)

6. I like to be rewarded.  Avatar rewards, gamer pic rewards, mental pat on the back rewards.  Yeah...

I'm sure there are more, but I think it's safe to say that I am indeed addicted.

they add replay value. that's about it.

Also, I'd rather have in game achievements/trophies that actually unlocks something within the game. It's a lot more rewarding imo.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

It depends on what the trophies/achievements are for. If its get a score of_______ for a game Im all for it. It adds replay value to the game. On the other hand complete chapter ____ of a game is total BS. Wayy too many games have gimmie achievements that trophy/gamescore whores eat up.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.
