These stsarters are the only starters in pokemon history so far that stay Pure (MEANING that once you obtain Typhlosion,Feraligaor,or Meganium They are still Fire ,Water ,and Grass type only).

The other features of the generation don't stop the Pokemon from being intensely useless (and boring, aside from Totodile).

As far as it being the most "revolutionary," overall this is true. The additions of genders, IVs, special stat split were all big. On the other hand it also has the worst balance of any generation, and the worst balance of typing. In generation 2 half of all Pokemon were normal, water, or poison types. It also didn't bother balancing its two new types at all, leaving them intersting but largely completely unused additions to the formula.

In addition, from an in-game perspective, Johto as a region was featureless and tiny. Kanto was empty to the point of it being almost eerie. The phone system was (and still is) incredibly annoying, and there were less side games than any other generation (poor Safari Zone).

Mind you, all of this stuff has been rectified in HGSS, except of the useless starter types (well, the Gen 4 spec/phys split gives Feraligatr some minor utility). So yay for that. But go gen 4 lol.

I have recently evolved my Togepi and my Flaaffy. I now have a Togetic and an Ampharos. It would take a simpleton to not differentiate between the two sets of evolutions.
