2 things:
1. I'm not sure why the publisher should matter.
2. Nintendo didn't publish a game called "Dragon Quest" in 1989 in America, they published a game called "Dragon Warrior". Just for accuracy.
Now that Nintendo is publishing Dragon Quest IX, are you interested in it?
Yes | 51 | 66.23% | |
Nah | 16 | 20.78% | |
I want it even less now! | 4 | 5.19%
What's Dragon Quest? | 6 | 7.79%
Total: | 77 |

dunno001 said: Hmm... the poll options seem a little lopsided to me. I get the yes/no, but what about those of us who were interested before Nintendo announced distro? I still voted yes, though I feel as though the wording indicates that Nintendo's involvement increased my interest, which isn't true. |
Well I guess for people who were already interested, they can vote yes. But yeah, I should have put an option for that. I can't see an option to edit the poll so unfortunately, I can't do that now.

1. SquareEnix hasn't been marketing Dragon Quest at all with the last 4 titles that came out (basically since Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker). Nintendo is specifically taking over Pubishing and Marketing because they stated they want the series to succeed and so THEY will see another third party succeed on THEIR platform (from the mouth of Iwata himself).
2. That's why I said it was renamed.
It was not till years later that knew it was not Nintendo who made it. 1. Did not really matter who did it was fun. 2. I got it with a subscription to Nintendo Power. 3. I was 7-9 when I got it.

I didnt know DQ was that popular outside of Japan.

You got it with a subscription to Nintendo Power? Lucky bastard! My folks HATED video games, and wouldn't even get me games much less magazines about games.

Yea My mom was kind of a game pusher, it kept me and my brother form fighting and carrying on. OH and she was and still is addicted to Tetris and Dr. Mario.
Nintendo may push in such a way that it might make DQ popular outside of Japan,
But for some reason the game seems suited to the Japanese and their fantasies. I think Americans and Europeans have diff't RPG fantasies and the DQ series is also something that "pleases" the Japanese culture.
I can see how FF7 "pleased" the US culture, but I cannot see how DQ will.
Who knows. Hopefully it ends up selling better.
Have you seen my avatar? And YES!

I've been saying since the beginning that DQIX will outsell FFXIII worldwide. With the game probably going to sell close to 4.5 million at the end of its life in Japan, that alone is going to probably be close to 2/3 to 3/4 of FFXIII total sales. If they just do some additional marketing for DQIX in America and Europe, they could easily pull another million or more out of both regions and bump that number up to 5.5 million. Even FFXIII is going to have trouble getting up there.

In terms of setting, Dragon Quest has a similar setting to games such as Zelda or even WRPGs (which it takes after). In terms of design, it utilizes direct design from Akira Toriyama, of Dragon Ball fame. And that was a hit in America, being one of the first and still one of the most popular Anime in America.
Its pretty sad that SquareEnix hasn't been able to make the series popular in America, much like Nintendo made Pokemon popular. Which Pokemon took direct insperation from Dragon Quest.
So I get the feeling a lot of you think FXIII is going to bomb in US/OTHERS?
