I didnt know DQ was that popular outside of Japan. |
I've been saying since the beginning that DQIX will outsell FFXIII worldwide. With the game probably going to sell close to 4.5 million at the end of its life in Japan, that alone is going to probably be close to 2/3 to 3/4 of FFXIII total sales. If they just do some additional marketing for DQIX in America and Europe, they could easily pull another million or more out of both regions and bump that number up to 5.5 million. Even FFXIII is going to have trouble getting up there.

I think Americans and Europeans have diff't RPG fantasies and the DQ series is also something that "pleases" the Japanese culture. I can see how FF7 "pleased" the US culture, but I cannot see how DQ will. Who knows. Hopefully it ends up selling better. |
In terms of setting, Dragon Quest has a similar setting to games such as Zelda or even WRPGs (which it takes after). In terms of design, it utilizes direct design from Akira Toriyama, of Dragon Ball fame. And that was a hit in America, being one of the first and still one of the most popular Anime in America.
Its pretty sad that SquareEnix hasn't been able to make the series popular in America, much like Nintendo made Pokemon popular. Which Pokemon took direct insperation from Dragon Quest.
