Forums - Gaming Discussion - How Capcom decided to Wii-make Okami

I'll be buying it. Like most people, I never got to play it on the PS2 and I really wanted to so this is definetly my excuse to be able to play it now. Can't wait. One of my hyped Wii games for 2008.

Capcom seems to be making a lot of right moves for Wii without really putting a hell of a lot of resources in it. Well whatever works I guess.

So much for "Sony's answer to Zelda." The franchise is coming to Nintendo!

Sony's answer to Zelda?

Lol!

It's almost too bad it wasn't developed or published by Sony, or else you might've had a point.

No, but it was exclusive for the Playstation 2.

So?

Was Grand Theft Auto 3 Sony's answer to Zelda because it was exclusive to the PS2?

Um..no. Because it was nothing like Zelda. At all. I think you completely missed his point.

Okami was a Zelda-esque game, exclusively on the PS2 ;). Not Sony's answer to Zelda per se, but most certainly PS2's answer.

I got the point completely. He should have been more specific.

"Answer" would imply that they were responding.

First of all, since GTA III, and the two subsequent games, outsold OoT by a wide margin, I'd say it was a pretty good answer. ;)

Second, Dark Cloud would more likely be an answer to Zelda, given that Sony published it (even if Level 5 developed it).

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Personally it looks to me like Capcom is one of the few 3rd parties that are looking at the Wii seriously as a platform. Unfortunately, they've only had time to put out ports or small scale games, quality ports mind you but ports nevertheless.

They've started to move their main games like MH3 but its gonna still be a bit of time before you see the big names but its looking very promising.

I would agree to some extent with you, Montana. However,  most people associate Metal Gear and Final Fantasy with Playstation, despite the fact that both originated on competitor's systems, neither is owned by Sony, and both could leave for greener pastures at any time they wanted.

And thus, I think one could reasonbly argue that some games not made by Sony have become so heavily invested in the Playstation brand that they are de facto Playstation/Sony games. I don't think Okami fits that description, as it was a disaster on the Playstation and sold well under expectations, but that wouldn't stop some from claiming otherwise.

Okami will still be a disaster, if it couldnt sell well on a 120 million+ install base, what makes you guys think it wil sell well on a 20million(by then) install base?

Because some demographics care more about some types of games then others.

Madden does way, way better on the Playstation and Xbox brands than it does on Nintendo consoles. Conversely, no adventure game on the Playstation or Xbox has even approached the success of adventure games on Nintendo consoles,  and platformers of all types (not just Mario) have always done exceedingly well on Nintendo systems, while the Playstation 2 could barely muster a single 2 million seller in the platform genre, despite the system's market share dominance.

I n short, every system has genres it's weak in, and genres it is strong in. Just as Viva Pinata failed on the 360, and Madden failed on the Wii, an adventure game very akin to Zelda is much more likely to sell well to a demographic that particularly enjoys games like Zelda.
