Naturally Mr. Thompson's first targets for this campaign are Freecell and Spider solitaire. I feel sorry for my 70-year old mother who is going to have her games taken off her if Mr Thompson has his way.
In some respects exposing someone's addictive tendancies at a young age allows parents and society to deal with that particular psychological illness before it manifests itself in more destructive ways (alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling addiction, eating disorders, sex addiction). In this way gaming can be used as a diagnostic tool and trigger for early intervention.
I say the fact that videogames can expose addictive potentialities puts up a case for all children to be given the opportunity to play video games ad lib. Then set some assessment criteria for parents to be able to ascertain whether their child is a potential addict. No sign of addiction = let the kid play when they want to play, they are capable of moderation and managing their time; some signs of addiction = put some conditions and boundaries around when and how long your kid can play games to ensure they don't lose balance in their lives; strong signs of addiction = get help for your kid before they turn to much worse objects of addicion.
Once again Jack Thompson unwittingly shows us how video games can be good for society.
