I'm asking because I'm reading this thread on a 480 monitor (sue me, the pc is ancient) and nothing is blurry...except maybe that picture.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

DVD looks worse than VHS? umm i dont know what your smoking buddy but you must prolly be using the worst DVD/TV combo yet prolly running off RF cables..

I was referring to the picture of the DVD in the OP, which is the same image as the blu ray 1080p but cropped and blurred.

That pic as it is, yes, surely it looks way worse than my Terminator 2 VHS.

If you haven't switched yet then yes I believe that 2010 is the year that you should.

Seriously I go to the movies and am disappointed with the picture quality now. That's a combination of my TV and Blu-Ray but still.. Once you go Full HD and 100Hz or more then yes 480p will not look pretty anymore.

100hz is all u need.

I think HD has already switched our expectations, purely because of HD tv shows, but Blu-ray players are still a waste of money still.

Ergo, traditional media in 90% of the industry is dead already, its all downloads and thats what we are really moving to.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

IMO, many people mistakenly think that people upgraded from VHS to DVD due to image quality... they didn't.

People upgraded from VHS to DVD because DVD offers extra features (documentaries, subtitles in several languages etc), durability, menus and ease of use (no more rewinding). Picture quality was also a factor, but a small one.

Blu-Ray over DVD only offers better picture quality. Most people don't care, certainly not enough to justify buying a new player and 30-50% more expensive movies.

oh please spare the BS a bluray movie is about £2 more expensive than the DVD version where I live (if you look in the right place)

there are no more excuses bluray is now affordable.

finally once you go bluray, you never turn back, lol.

Perhaps but I like to have physical media and I'm sure there are others who like to have their movies and books on a shelf and not in a folder on their PC. Also there is the issue of having a monthly download limit and internet speeds in many countries and HD content is very data heavy.

For now, at least for people who like to have physical media, Blu-Ray is the top of the range and I think is pretty affordable for middle income families.

Having said that, I still wouldn't buy things like Two and a Half Men or The Simpsons or other TV shows on Blu-Ray even if they were offered on that format because the picture clarity and quality at 480p is perfectly fine and won't take away from those shows. For example, The Big Bang Theory is a throw away comedy and isn't going to be more enjoyable in Full HD.
