Forums - General Discussion - 7 in 10 Americans believe Iran has Nuclear Weapons

Posted: February 19th, 2010 12:00 PM ET

Washington (CNN) – Seven in 10 Americans believe that Iran currently has nuclear weapons, according to a new national poll.

Friday's release of the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey comes just hours after Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said the Islamic republic isn't seeking and doesn't believe in pursuing nuclear weapons. Khamenei was responding to a draft United Nations report that said that Iran may be working to develop a nuclear weapon.

The poll indicates that 71 percent of the public says Iran has nuclear weapons, with just over one in four disagreeing. More than six in ten think the U.S. should take economic and diplomatic efforts to get Iran to shut down their nuclear program, with only a quarter calling for immediate military action.

---- Ok, but they don't have Nuclear Weapons. How can people be so unaware, and this is after Iraq, that a middle eastern country does not actually pose an immediate threat?

That's a bit awkward, but I wonder exactly how the question was formulated in the survey.

I'm one of the three in ten that doesn't.

We're not all stupid.

Oh... it's a CNN poll.

Nevermind...

Noooo! the nuclear weapons again!!!!

They should shut up, United States has the most nuclear weapons in the world and no one cares

Like Iran with one or two nukes would be dangerous. I mean, certainly a bad situation, but Iran i think is cognizant enough to realize that *using* a nuke would be ruinous.

Israel with nukes is at least as dangerous as Iran with them, yet no-one seems to complain.

Because we're not unstable and likely to launch it out of petty anger and jealousy.

This is not true and you know it.

Why, exactly? What makes Israeli conduct in foreign affairs better than Iran? What has one done that the other has restrained itself from? Both have made threats against the other to take disturbingly drastic action, just that Ahmadinejad's language is somewhat more apocalyptic.

The only difference is the chance that Iran's regime could destabilize, and then do something stupid, but as long as they're thinking clearly, they're not going to use nukes.

The thing that disturbs me the most is that, despite Americas press freedom ranking, the majority of citizens clearly are no wiser to the propaganda being pumped to them from particular sources.

You could argue that Iran, or China's, falibility exists because of a lack of media diversity but you can't say that about America.
