and cygwin is still only 10% loaded. bah

i think he is mainly concerned with how we overload the functions...

You have studied operators... right? Know how they work?

uh oh... an all-nighter coming up.

are you required to use cygwin for some reason?  that seems overkill... i'm surprised you aren't using some standard development platform like Visual C++ or CodeWarrior or something.

Don't worry, I have a BS in CS and I was confused.  Then again, I wasn't the greatest programmer (5 years and 2.4 GPA in undergrad-- woohoo!).

we have to use cygwin...i kind of hate it...

i'm more comfortable in visual c...but thats a whole nother issue.

I'm pretty hit or miss with c++.  I tend to either do everything badly or very well for my assignments, but i'm more consistent on the tests which are worth more so i'm ok.

At the rate cygwin is downloading though i'm going to have maybe 90 minutes of time to install to program this entire thing, which is why i need the code to be perfect as i head in to the program

edit: what i really resent is that i'm a history major and i took this class for the potential of being able to help ioi but it is kind of backfiring a bit.

This brings back horrible memories of being totally and completely lost in C++ class.

wow, that's a lot of dedication towards improving this website!

i guess if you have visual C++ you can start coding it up as cygwin is getting installed... i hope that there is some c++ compilers that come with the version of cygwin you're installing.

we have to use emacs...

work in Visual C++, code it up, debug everything, just copy the files over.  or cut and paste.

emacs is just a txt editor, after all.  obviously if in an exam you may be required to use emacs, so at some point you'll need to get used to it, but you're a little short on time right now.

you still have time... 1am if you're on the east coast.  like i said, an all-nighter coming up...

i know a bit more in visual c++ because i used to mess around with it when i was 14-16 but I don't have it on my current pc (which is why i'm downloading cygwin).

the sad thing is my professor had the flu on wendsday. its entirely possible that he still has it.

in which case i could be up very late for nothing.

I recommend using Visual Studio Express. Its free - and once you install the service pack, its sort of.. pretty stable. I personally prefer VC6, but its not bad.

Perfect for things like this :)

(isn't there a Windows version of emacs?)

Good luck - I'm off home, after wasting one of my last days at work. Probably be back on tonight... depressing, I *should* be out having some form of life on Friday...

They do that to force people to learn c++ rather than how to write c++ with the IDE holding your hand. Theres more than enough people in the industry that are rendered useless when you take their IDE away. As for helping out ioi, programming is a case of a little knowledge being a bad thing. I'm not trying to discourage anyone wanting to learn to program (whether at uni or by themselves) but it takes at least a couple of years before you would be competent enough to work on a high traffic website like this (allot of 'proffesionals' never get that good). On a side note, why the hell does the quote button need to insert tables?
