I take it Edge magazine doesn't rate scarred pasty gray males that highly then?

I think they just won't like his tattoo's. And his clothes are so Ancient Greece when he should know by now that this year is all about Ancient Rome. e.e

When you're living your sex-life 1/4 of an hour at a time, the ease of putting on and taking off a toga really puts them on the forefront of modern male attire. >_>

God of War (PS2): Metacritic - 94; Edge - 80
God of War II (PS2): Metacritic - 93; Edge - 70
God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP) : Metacritic - 91; Edge - 70

Bayonetta (360 version): Metacritic - 91; Edge - 100

I think we all agree on Edge giving the lowest score on Metacritic to GoW III... An 8/10 if it gets a score higher than 95 on metacritic, otherwise it will be 7/10 for sure.

Ha, and the reason for this is pretty obvious...most journamists likely aren't that great at action games, and likely don't compare them at a high level.

Aaaaaaanyway, sorry to drag this thread back on topic.

That's a pretty big generalisation you make there without any substantiation whatsoever. I would think you're right about "most journalists" given the 95% of journalists don't review video games and probably don't play video games much. But what is being discussed here isn't the opinions of most journalists, rather the reviews of video game reviewers, so I assume that's really what you mean. You claim that only the EDGE reviewers like/play (and are thus any good at) Hack'n'Slash games whereas all the other reviewers don't, and that's why they give GoW such high scores. And yet these video game reviewers' professional lives revolve around playing and critically assessing A LOT of video games of various genres. And you think most of them haven't developed a better than average proficiency at H'n'S games, especially the people who review the H'n'S games? It would be unprofessional of any review site to have a racing/sports game fan who doesn't like and would never choose to play a H'n'S game do a review of an H'n'S game. So rather than assuming all but the EDGE reviewer is any good at H'n'S it is far more likely that the great majority of H'n'S reviewers have sufficent skill to be able to properly assess a H'n'S game on it's merits.

The line of argument that 95% of H'n'S reviewers aren't that good at action games and hence will gave GoW a higher score than it deserves has no credibility.

GoW's story is well above average for video games. Far from my favourite, but it certainly adds to, rather than detracts from, the overall quality of the game.

I'd say 7 too and 8 for GT5

here is the secret that no one knows only English games on playstation get rated high, which explains why LBP got 10/10 from them, everything else they deduct points from for not being on the 360.

I just think Edge has a few problems.

1) They are inconsistent with their reviews.
2) They are huge Halo fanboys. Anything with Halo in its name gets above a 9.
3) For some reason, they hate PS3 FPS. Maybe they don't like the controller.. who knows.

I disagree about a lot of the things you think are better in GOW compared to NG, but fair enough ;).To each their own man. I will add though, that Ninja Gaiden 2 has way, way better weapons ;). And that visually, all Ninja Gaiden's = better than GOW :). GOW has an awesome sense of scale, and Kratos is a damn cool character though. I personally was really disappoint with how shallow thier depictions of the greek gods were though.

And yes, in the end, Metacritic is somewhat useless. The truth is, different outlets, even different reviewers at the same outlet all have different ideas of what a 5 or a 6 means, never mind how absurd it is to judge games based on a single number in the first place :). and that Metacritic tried to shoehorn of of that into thier own ideal of what a grade score means. Metacritic, is a means to an end. Its an easy way to see what the general review population likes, and that's it. There is no problem, the only problem is when people can't decipher this for themselves, in my opinion.

So ya, really, if EDGE gives a game a 7, thats's actually a very solid score. I always find it funny when people get thier panties in a twist because EDGE was critical of thier new favorite game though :)/

I'm glad you were comprehensive about my opinion, and didn't rage when I said that God of War has better graphs when compared to Ninja Gaiden =P I said that because God of War's demo was beautiful, and my TV, probably 8 or 9 years old, didn't really let me enjoy Uncharted's 2 potential. But with God of War 3, it was pure "awesomeness" lol Hopefully won't disappoint me, or anyone else, but if it does, I'll just blame the hype lol I agree with the rest you said, reviews are overated =P

a 7 from edge means 8.3.
1.3 being the number of points their average review differs from what their score of average is.

Uh huh..

They have Halo: ODST a 9.  Does their score on that game really mean 10.3?

yep.

Check this out:

Out of their last 350 reviews they awarded an average of 6.3 points per game.

In Edge magazine, 5 means average. However, if a game is average, it should be 6.3, because that is their average review.

So, you add 1.3 to every score, and for every review that goes over a hundred, a point is taken away from Edge's credibility.

Out of interest could you play that game with a Official Playstation Magazine for me please, I would love to see how unbiased they are....
