This is just my opinion and I've done zero research on the matter:

I think that Nintendo does whatever it wants to do.
I think Sony does what it thinks we want them to do.
I think Microsoft does all kinds of research and does what they need to do.

So while Sony and Nintendo take some risks (Sony does with technology and Nintendo does with creativity) Microsoft plays it very safely. They go for the tried and true. As a result, they don't really make any mistakes. Getting successful franchises on their console is all part of the formula.

Nintendo does what the majority wants them to do

Sony does whatever we don't want them to do

MS does what Sony should have done.

I actually think your breakdown is more accurate!

Oh you, mine is just a simple version of yours.

But wait! If you call within the next four minutes, we'll make it even simpler!

Sony=That one loser.

Microsoft=That one dude.

Nintendo=That one winner.

Damn, I just had to.

How dare you.

Nintendo= Understands

Sony= Oblivious

MS= Trying

I won this.

On topic: didn't Sony pay for the Batman exclusive DLC?

Yes they also published it exclusive in EU i believe.

@Serapoth

I agree, they needed to go multiplatform because the game wouldnt sell good on one console.

They don't need to really let the PS3 userbase know that FFXIII exists, but on the Xbox 360 they do. This is the reason for the advertising deals. Sony has little to gain from telling people something they already know. Thats why it doesn't bother them because to them its not important. A lot of people already bought PS3s for FFXIII even before it was announced. Whereas the Xbox 360 has a large audience of otherwise WRPG style gamers which SE is keen to tap into.

I could not disagree more. The casual gamer who only plays games like Final Fantasy, will see the commercial and the bundle and follow it accordingly. This would be different if there'd been multiple Final Fantasys released in the past few years, but there haven't been. Why would someone pay $300 for a PS3 and another $60 for the game, when they can get a 360 with two controllers, twice the harddrive space, and the game for just $50 more? If FFXIII had a bundle and the exclusive adverts on its side, you could be seeing a bundle as successful as the 360's MW2 one from last November. Microsoft didn't have to do one for Modern Warfare 2 either, everyone knew it was coming out on the 360, but look how successful that bundle was.

The game could've been a real system seller for the PS3 outside of Japan as well, but now it will be so more for the 360 because of the bundle.

Since when would Final Fantasy be casual? Last time I checked for the most part its the same audience whom bought the game for Final Fantasy VII minus a few who got bored with it, plus a few less of new people introduced later. If ~50% of the Japanese audience for the PS3 bought the game then how can that be a casual game? Most casuals would be incredibly bored with it. You have to actually like the series really to get into it.

You are confusing casual gamers with casual games. For example, by brother likes Halo. Is Halo a casual game? No. But does the fact that he owns Halo and hasn't bought a game since then make him a casual gamer? Absolutely. The big name franchises are like that for certain people. They are interested in one or two franchises and pretty much nothing else. You'd be surprised at how many people that applies to.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

I believe that was Ghostbusters, but I could be mistaken

Thank you for answering your own question.

OT, perhaps sony just decided they couldn't best M$ at the auction. They started off the gen 3 bln in the red ya know.

Microsoft isn't bullying Sony at all. If you want bullying look at what Sony did to Sega during the PS1/Saturn days. They secured Tomb Raider 2 exclusively on PS1 in order to kick the Saturn while it was already down far worse than any position the PS3 was in this generation.

If Microsoft truly wanted to bully Sony they could go on a buying spree and buy up third parties with the most popular franchises. For example they could easily buy Take Two given its current situation or even go after EA or Activision.

Exactly.  This argument is getting tired - why is MS is the evil tyrant for paying for timed exclusives, and Sony the noble moral high-fibre being for paying for more developers?

I'm sure it won't be looked upon as noble should MS buy one of these developers, like some suggest.  Would everyone start praising the massive first-party that MS commands? Or view it as anti-competitive?

If PS3 was the #1 selling console like the PS1 and PS2 was I'm sure alot of games like GTA would still be exclusive but the PS3 have lost alot of fans due to the high price and less games at the time but the fanbase is growing back. I think Sony should have bought some developers to keep their top exclusive games on the PS3. As long as the games are still on the PS3 then I'm fine by it. I am happy that the PS3 have more new exclusive IP's like Infamous, Heavy Rain, MAG, and others which Microsoft should do. I must say Microsoft have done the smart thing in getting the top exclusive games that Sony once had because if they didn't I think the 360 would be 3rd place.
