Forums - Sales Discussion - Worldwide Numbers Up - Feb 6, 2010! More adjustments too?!

Interesting things are happening. Looks like vg is struggling to make sense of it.

Its a big big world, Sony is very popular all over many impossible to track locations.

This is demotivating. PS2 was closing in on 60 million in Others and I was really anticipating it. Now it is down to 55. :(

Sony shipped 33.5 million ps3 at the end of Dec. 09, and the ps3 is at 31.65 right now. So almost 2 million ps3 available. I think its funny that my brother went to 15 stores and all the stores were sold out of ps3 so my brother just ordered one off of amazon.

there could be a very good reason why those two facts could co-exist.

Like demand exceeding actual manufactured products ?

Anyway it seems that the shortage will last for a while http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/sony-ps3-supply-to-be-tight-over-coming-months/ , but hey Sony could always use some of those 3 million PS3 sitting on the shelves to suplly NA stores.

could be a lot of reasons. It could be that some retailers have a huge amount of stock. It could be a revision with new hardware. It could be a price drop coming up. It could be a stockpiling to deal with the next 2 months of huge game releases. It could be that sony is counting units sold to the airforce or other institution. It really can be anything.

The shortages may only be in NA and I'll just wait for sony numbers at the end of March.  I'm sure sony counts the ps3 sold to the airforce and other institutions but thats probably 100,000 units max.

also, it could be that ps3 actually is undertracked currently, and that ioi knows it is. Even if he knows that it is undertracked by 500k, where does he put those numbers? Make up a country and put it there. It seems that they are going through every country piece by piece and will eventually find their home. That's another possibility too.

Wait it went from 5.88 last week to 6.3 this week and the PS3 is selling more consistently....? What?

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

I never said anything about the console sales. Just the fact that he thinks it is over looked.

Who is exactly over looking it? THe companies that are pretty much in Microsoft's pockets?

So multi platform games start out on the 360? big deal. They are still great games. Instead of looking at review scores because it got HALF a less point how about you just enjoy them like I do and play the game.

Your mentally already hating the game because it got 9 instead of a 9.5.

Honestly you guys need to just accept it. or how about you stop playing your PS3 for 3months and go get a Wii and enjoy the VAST AWESOMENESS that 3rd parties put on Wii haha. Then when you return to the PS3 you will NOT think the same. a multi platform game with a score 0.5 less out of 10 that the 360 will be great to you.

Just stop.

Look at Bayonetta on ps3 one month ago. Your argument is so flawed and you are trivializing a VERY "big deal".

I'm still trying to understand the problem.  This isn't 2007.  The PS3 not only has a ton of exclusives that Sony negotiated or bought the devs outright, but it also gets a huge number of multiplatform titles that are available on the 360.  And, with the rare exception (Bayonetta and ...), they are usually identical and have been for the last couple of years.

So basically when we hear PS3 fans complaining about not having games on their console or not having every single multiplatform game be equal or superior, it sounds like the rich kid complaining that his mom bought him a black Porsche instead of a red one ...

The only reason you still lack enlightenment is because you think this is the only reason, but even in your justification there are flaws. Bayonetta, half life 2, fallout 3. Those are 2 GOTYs and a AAA game doing very very poorly on the ps3. You say, it's like a matter of car color, but I'm sorry, it really really really isn't.

Continuing on my point, it's not just about what console is the lead platform or which looks ever slightly better. It's about the number of games that come to the system, it's about selling as many as possible so that costs go down which trickles down to the customer in a price drop. It's about more income for exclusive developers to make more AAA quality games that we enjoy. Every ps3 fan should care about how many ps3s are sold, and so should every other console owning gamer.

I think you misunderstood my car analogy.  ITS A FREAKIN' PORSCHE!!!!!!!!!  Instead of looking at what the PS3 doesn't have, how about enjoying what it does?  If those 3 games never came to the PS3, it would still have a fantastic lineup of games.  You sound like a big whiner.  Not saying you are but that's what you're portraying here and, frankly, its not very flattering.

I agree about console sales, though, and even MORE about software sales and online revenue (PSN would've been better if they copied XBL more and just charged for it; SCE would be raking in more money).  An informed console owner should want the manufacturerer of their console(s) to be profitable more than anything, even install base.

haha it's utterly hilarious how you say that I sound like a whiner because I spent 60$ on a piece of shit half life 2 port. Your solution: Don't play those GOTY games! Brilliant.

And no, profitability is not the name of the game. Sustainability is.

Thought about this again, and I don't see how these numbers can be right. I don't mean to whine, but there's hardly been a good explanation about the adjustments and none of my questions ever get answered here.

So, am I right in saying around 3M more PS3's have been 'sold' by Sony than have been sold to consumers according to this site? Well if so, how can this be correct?

  • If Sony's sales are counted by orders/financial transactions then the numbers don't make sense either. Im hearing that there are PS3 shortages in NA, so just say there are 1M PS3's on shelves/in warehouses/in transportation - that means 2M PS3's have been ordered by retailers. Now, why would retailers order so much stock over a period of time when PS3s aren't selling as much as we thought? Also, that would mean that the retailers have a very low stock turnover rate. And, if 2M orders have been made then why is there PS3 shortages? Trust me, Sony can keep up to console demand fine rightly. Makes no sense. This point does still leave the numbers believable, but very very doubtful.
  • If Sony' count their sales by shipped (or as soon as the units leave the factory) then the numbers are definitely wrong. There is no way on this earth that retailers have the storage capabilities to store 3M current PS3 models for quite some period of time

Also, I was lurking about and a few questions still need answered Imo.

  • Firstly, from a while back and the big adjustments. Why did it take VGC 3/4 years to figure out that they were overtracking in 'Others' when presumably the data they obtained is released every year or so?
  • Secondly, what data is being used to base these adjustments on. It couldn't be VGC's own sample data as its far to small, and if it were Sony/NPD related then wouldn't adjustments have been sooner? I don't understand how adjustments are not made when big name figures are released, but are when no data (at least to the public) is available.

So, anyone care to help?

  • There are so many possible answers to this question that it's hardly useful to list them all. Your best bet is just to wait it out and see what happens.

  • same thing here

  • Hard to track Europe and other countries because they do not have reliable tracking figures like in the USA, or at least they don't publish them, record them. It's like saying "Throughout high school, I was in school for approximately 1080 days" That's a pretty good guess, but to really find out, I'd need a record of all school days and compare them with ones where I was sick or had a snow-day.
  • Secondly, what data is being used to base these adjustments on. • VGC gets data from a number of sources including retailers and customers, I believe. However, some part of that equation may have been missing up until now.

So, anyone care to help?
