Forums - General Discussion - What does an american accent sound like to a foreigner?

There isn't really one American accent. Different regions sound very different. The closest you'll come to a universal accent is that of areas where people are from all over (e.g. around Raleigh in North Carolina, So Cal, Southern Florida, etc.).

Texas is where Santa Claus spends his summers right?

Tease.

I have no precise idea how exactly those accent listed sound. I like Edward Norton's accent, and I'm too lazy to check where he's from.

So since I live in Columbus, I have the steriotypical American accent, eh?

Well, to be fair, the 'typical' American accent ranges from PA to CA. I'm not a foreigner, so I can't really say :-p

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Which is the normal accent in USA? I would guess the one they use in TV shows mostly(except when they want to portrait a guy with other accent). Id say the one that bothers me is the one they use for farmers or gangsters on tv.

I also dont like the way latins speak in english(At least when they speak like the stereotype).

The average American accent would be the "Accent Neutral" dialect that is taught to newscasters I guess, the closest it comes is to a California accent. Here in lovely Minnesota, we've got a pretty pronounced accent (think the movie Fargo but tone it down a few notches), it is what it is. Texans make fun of me, but I can always be secure in knowing that none of my relatives are married to their sisters/brothers/cattle.

For the record, the sexiest accents are: British, Scottish and French. For women that is. American, not so hot.

I've often wandered what English sounds like to someone who doesn't speak it. I bet it sounds slow and clunky.

In general I hate accents. Usually people with accents sound low class and uneducated, no matter which country it is.

That said, I do like some Irish and Scottish dialects. (maybe it's those around big cities? I have no idea).

Everyone has an accent.

There are so many different American accents, I don't think I can nail down what a person from Ohio sounds like. Most of them seem to have a strong emphasis on 'a' sounds and a slight nasal quality. The average American accent sounds as if its designed to cut through the noise of a crowd, which makes it sound a little obnoxious if there's no crowd to be overcome.

Texas sounds normal? Yeah right. The Northeast sounds normal.

No, you're wrong. California sounds normal... and to a lesser extent, Utah and Wyoming.
