Forums - Gaming Discussion - 5th year of the gen and CRYSIS still hasnt been surpassed......

This just in: The average consumer doesn't really care about graphics. That's why the Wii sells like hotcakes, despite the fact that it is just 2 Gamecubes ducttaped together. The HD twins have better graphics and sell worse, and the PC has the best graphics and is basically ignored due to poor sales of games.

Most people buying games don't really care if what they're seeing in 1080p or whatever. In fact, most of them have no idea what that actually means.

not want to start a war... but your point ain't backed up by facts... the hd consoles sell better than wii (only 49% for wii, against 51% of HD consoles in market share) even by being more expensive, even without motion control... HD is noticeable over SD even with one eye shut...

dont make assumptions that most people are dumb...

More news just in...you fall into this HD trap you are falling into the shortest media life ever well discounting UMD. My predicition this HD "cycle" will be the shortest ever. Blu Ray will be the windows vista of the physical media world

HD will fail? Chasing better picture and audio quality has always been on the agenda for anyone and everyone involved with hi-fi. In two to three years every single TV and PC monitor made will be HD, its the future of the TV medium and to deny that is plain silly. I do agree that Blu-Ray won't ever be as important as DVD's or CD's were in their day but discounting HD resolution(s) as a whole is completely backwards. Its the next logical step in a long process (stereo sound, surround sound, color television, cinema, cable, satelite dishes, web-TV, widescreen formats) so to disregard HD you'd also have to disregard everything else that came before it.

My predicament?

Is that you have to spend about twice the price of a Ps3 to make crysis run 60fps, and probably next year there will be a new game with better graphics so you will have to upgrade the Pc again...while I still have fun to play some Snes games, crysis in a year or 2 will be completely forgotten.

Besides, some graphic aspects, like character animations for example, are already better on some console games like Resident Evil 5 and Uncharted 2.

I just started playing GoldenEye again. Beats Crysis any day.

the only reason nobody has surpassed Crysis is because developers try to make their games for the wider market.

just making another graphic heavyweight like crysis requires high system requirments which in-turn leads to a smaller market.

you really think other devs of this industry can't outdo it?

Crysis has the worst engine ever. It runs terribly on middle hardware. Bad dev work is bad dev work. Look at GTAIV- its PC requirements are insane.

Crysis has a great engine, it is insane how many things are being calculated. If it doesn't run on middle hardware it doesn't mean it has a bad engine. It's just a little ahead of its time.

The problem with the Crysis engine is that it doesn't scale back very well. But I think it's more of a choice than bad programming. I think it would been a pretty big undertaking to make it scale back more than it already does.

It must scale back quite a lot if it is being used for the console versions in crysis 2

It's not, Crysis runs on CryEngine 2, where as Crysis 2 runs on CryEngine 3. CryEnginge 3 has taken quite some time to develop, so they decided to take that big undertaking in the form of building a new engine

So rather worryingly for us PC gamers that love extreme graphics this cryengine 3 will not be a jump at all just an easy way to port it to inferior systems. Well crysis 2 will be slated if it is just a crappy ps3 port

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

It might have the most technically proficients graphics but to me it looks rather uninspired. I can think of a lot of games that have more captivating graphics even on the PS2.
