I know where I live, the hourly wages for manual labor jobs is incredible. Plumbers, carpenters, construction workers, electricians, ect make $20-$40 an hour with only 6 months of trade school experience. Comparatively, I know college graduates that don't make that much because they chose crappy degrees in things that they wanted, not what the world needed. |
Are they self-employed or do they get that money as regular employees?
It's similar in Sweden, workers are paid more than the typical university graduate.
mrstickball said: I would agree that the problems started with the baby boomers. After the double-whammy of the depression and WW2, kids were coddled too much by parents that just didn't care after going through so much. Throw in a population boom that meant families had more kids, and less time to care for them, and you had a screwed up, retarded generation. From the 60's to the 80's, we had so much stupid stuff, no wonder 'my' generation is so apathetic. |
While I don't necessarily like the baby boomers, calling them screwed up and retarded is a bit offensive. Or are you referring to people from Generation X? I can't really tell. Either way, I wish you'd stop generalizing certain groups of people so much. It's uncalled for and often just mean.
But it's all kind of stupid anyways. Considering that couples are started to have kids later and later, the whole generation thing doesn't matter as much.
Maybe more lazy but a lot more responsible.
Especially regarding alcohol and these kinds of things.
Edit: Wait, I'm talking about Generation Z here.
Coming as someone who works within the film industry and is a memeber of generation y I find the assumption that working in entertainment isn't hard work quite offensive.
You tell that to me when I've just done a 15 hour shoot with few breaks which stared at 2 am. Or after I've just finished a long editing job where I had to watch the sequence hundreds of times to make sure its up to scratch.
I have a mate that works at a local television station that has to get up at 2 in the morning every day and because its live work every second is accounted for meaning its really quit frenetic work.
People that pursue the "glamorous" industries seriously, know well that its extremely hard work. People that have the dream but don't understand the reality get crushed soon enough.
Me: Joined U.S. Airforce, built manufactured homes, worked in a factory, sold shoes at a shoestore, worked in sporting goods at Wal-Mart (worst job, ever), worked at a factory again, sheriff's deputy, police officer, sheriff's deputy AND police officer, nuclear security officer.
I haven't been unemployed since I was eighteen.
A guy that I work with, now asked a 20 year old if he needed a job. He could get the kid a job making $8 an hour. The kid (according to the guy that told me the story) said, "Hell no. I ain't getting a job for less than $20 an hour). And that's pretty much what I see among the younger people. Go to college but not work. Graduate and not work. Be too proud to work a menial job.
And my kid is going to be the laziest of them all. I give her EVERYTHING that I didn't have. She's not going to know the value of hard work or a dollar, either.
Now, excuse me while I buy $100 dollars worth of video games that I'll never play.

Hahaha, comedy gold!
I'm not going to work a 9-5 for the rest of my life because I'm physically incapable. Doesn't mean I don't know what hard work is. Different times different values no need to generalize.

I’m not sure if lazy is the correct word ...
Generation Y is an age group that has been coddled and spoiled to an unprecedented level, and the result is that their self worth has been inflated to an insane level.
