Modern Warfare 2 trumps entire first party lineups

Here are some interesting sales graphs based on NPD numbers from Satoru Iwata’s Q&A session with Nintendo investors.

In this comparison the Wii easily leads the pack while the PS3 and 360 are about the same. Now some may wonder how the same graph would look with first party software being removed.

Things are getting more even now, because the Wii loses its major advantage over the competition, Nintendo games. But what I want you to pay attention to is by how much the PS3 and 360 numbers dropped. Now compare this drop to the drop seen when Modern Warfare 2 gets removed from the picture.

Without the three editions of Modern Warfare 2 (normal, special and whatever else) the PS3 and 360 experience a bigger drop in their figures than with 42 and 47 first party games being removed, respectively.

Makes you realize how dependent Sony and Microsoft are on third parties, because both companies failed to provide a system selling title on their own for this holiday season. Meanwhile, the Wii outsells the PS3 and 360 combined without any major third party games and despite Nintendo’s dominance on their own platform, third party sales are still healthy.

Well Sony has always relied on 3rd party software, that was the key back in the PS1 days was to get as many dev's to develop for their system. Same thing with the Xbox but I guess MS didn't try hard enough until the 360 came out with guns blazing. If you combined the amount of PS3/360 3rd party games in that graph it would equal roughly the same amount as the Wii's 3rd party software, but the HD twins stats would totally trump the Wii's.

It's not a bad thing either for Nintendo to be pushing out massive amounts of software because they make money out of it, I think complaining about it isn't going to do anything about the 3rd party situtation on Wii either. Dev's need to understand the proper formula for the Wii like Nintendo has and just go with it.

MW2 was obviously a sales behemoth, but titles like uncharted and halo help the ps3 and 360 stand out. The first party titles from sony and MS create the backbone of their respective consoles software lineup.

Not really, both have at least one mega series (GT and Halo) which would be capable of selling a lot of consoles all by itself, and both own a ton of high quality solid selling games that they could put on their system (especially sony).

Not really fair by Nintendo to remove the best selling HD title from the picture and then make comparisons.

I doubt one multimillion selling game such as a GT or Halo would be enough to really push either console out of the realm of GC numbers. And Sony's first party software besides the aforementioned hasn't shown to be all that impressive (#'s wise) Xbox first party is nonexistent. Which is my point third parties are largely responsible for those platforms success.

Which is a dangerous position to be in, in my opinion.

There's no worry about third parties leaving the HD consoles, if anything they are moving more toward HD consoles and further away from the Wii by recent comments of Sega, Ubisoft, Activision etc.
