X is the worst of them all. Try playing XII or IX if you dont mind its visual style.

best ones: VII. VIII. IX.
but, well, XII is not so good but, still a great game to play!

Totally agree, didn't like the combat system in XII either but it still is better in every way then VIII which is the worst of the series in my book.
They are ALL amazing games
don't listen to people who say FF_ is trash
because none of them are trash.
I would say play FF12 next, if you can buy FF8 from PSN, not FF7 as I am enjoying FF8 much more, it has aged far better than FF7 did.
Also FFX-2 could be another one you could try
Or you could just save up £40 for Final Fantasy XIII.

Nobody is going to agree on which FF games are good...
Don't pay attention to the FFXII detractors. That game is a masterpiece and has my all time favorite gameplay+battle system amongst all the FFs I have played: from the Fifth onward (excluding XI), although it is not my favorite FF at the end, but who cares about what I like, right?
Some people were told off because the game does not have either a dramatic (new FFs) or funny (old FFs) story but instead more of a fantastic and political outlook of a story but I dig that stuff too and I know that there is more people out there that likes this too and maybe you would. Try it out, I recommend it to you. If you don't like it, feel free to come here and insult me all you want, I'll give you free pass. XD
X-2 is not that bad but the story to me was not that memorable. The best parts of the story were those were you felt nostaligic towards those moments that reminded you of the previous game. To tell the truth I somehow forgot most of the story from that game. For me it wasn't that memorable. The battle system was not bad at all.
Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

And to be honest, there's only X-2 and XII left to get, and I didn't like either of them to be honest... You should look into buying the PS1 Final Fantasy games, I mean, I LOVED IX, wasn't too bothered for VII or VIII although I did enjoy them... |
Yeah I'm definatley enjoying it, Although I knew very little about the FF's games before I bought this and I thought that when fighting enemies that you had more freedom, I didn't know that you would be locked into a "Battle System". Although to be honest Its kind of grown on me, I think it's neat that it requires a little bit of thought opposed to just button mashing. Does "Final Fantasy XIII" have the same battle system? Reason I'm asking is a saw a trailer for it & it looked like the Character was running about freely when fighting enemies.

I don't see why not. X-2 cut a lot of the fat from X and had a superior battle system. I actually had fun with the combat. X felt decrepit in comparison.
XII is abetter game from every standpoint. The only thing I didn't like was that there was a lot of political focus in the game's storyline, but I've come to expect a level of that in a Matsuno game. There's always just a little bit of it there.
