Forums - Gaming Discussion - Does Mass Effect bring RPG's back from nowhere land?

Mass Effect 2 is an evolution of RPGs... it's an incredible game.

Slowly they're removing all the annoying features of old rpgs (that older gamers still seem to love) while make the experience a lot better in every single way.

In my opinion it's hard to play other RPGs/games after playing Bioware RPGs.

I think it does, Mass Effect 2 is just simply crazy, One of the best RPG ever MADE.
JRPG needs to learn from Bioware, I'av never really been a fan of WRPG such as Mass effect 2 until i played it
One of the best if not its up there in my top 3

^ No they don't. Back when JRPG's were considered good, Western developers didn't try learn from Japanese Developers. They went their separate direction. JRPG's have strong base, they don't have come out the same over and over. Give us different story, different set of characters from your young town boy who has to save a princess.

RPGs have always still been here. I know I will get flamed for saying this buy in MYYYY opinion. I think The Last Remnant is better than Mass Effect 1 + 2.

Odd it should be mentioned because I will be playing Last Remnant after I finish Mass Effect 2.  I actually installed The Last Remnant and played it for 30 minutes earlier today just to get a feel for it and I have to say... I wish I had been playing Mass Effect 2 for those 30 minutes.

The only judgments I have for the two games in comparison to one another is that Mass Effect 2 feature more choices in the first 30 minutes, more excitement, and more polish than The Last Remnant.  Then again, most of the first 30 minutes of The Last Remnant were spent watching cutscenes without pushing any buttons.

JRPGs have their audience so JRPG makers do try to make their games for that audience.... but they still make games with save points?!

They could at the very least get rid of save points.

Jrpgs don't have to learn jack from wrpgs, rather they need to evolve by striking off on their own path and creating new experiences. In this regard we are already seeing changes in the form of Valkyrie Chronicles, End of Eternity and the incredible Demon's Souls. In fact with the exception of Fallout 3, wrpgs can take a flying leap. Everything from the stories to the ugly aesthetics, characters, to the throw away morality systems are a turn off.

So this thread is basicly Selnor quoting people who dosent think ME2 is RPG in its purest form and tells them that they're wrong. Good stuff.

OT: No this is not some form or pure RPG like no other. Background and character design with hidden stats isnt a "oldschool going back to its roots" RPG. ME2 is a TPS with a "skill tree" much like Boarderlands, but in ME you can change how the character looks.

You said it better than what I wanted to say. +1

Those games could learn from WRPGs... who knows... maybe they were influenced by WRPGs.

Demon's souls felt more like a WRPG then a JRPG to me anyway.

Mass Effect 2 is more like an Action Adventure with RPG elements game...And RPG's were not in the Nowhere land.
