Forums - Nintendo Discussion - More GDC/New Nintendo console/handheld potential

It could be a Wii redesign, not an upgrade. Removal of the GC relic the same way DSi removed the GBA one, ability to "plug in" more than one balance board(or other such peripheral) at once, added solid state drive along with the optical one by making it possible to play game off the SD card, WM+ build in Wii remote and wireless nunchuk, maybe a camera or Wii speak or both integrated in the sensor bar. Sell it for 250$ and you get yourself the Wii equivalent of the DSi, it work for handheld why not for console?

Indeed, I think something along those lines is pretty likely if Nintendo has anything planned soon. If they were to redesign the exterior slightly it might go a bit to helping things out, too! :D

If the's any new platform it'll be a DS successor imo as with 125m units sold and the library it's obtained I wouldn't be surprised if they feel it's reached it's potential, it would also make sense for a new handheld to coincide with the rumoured new generation of Pokemon on the way. The will be no Wii Hd as that's not very cost efficient neither is increasing flash memory when they have an update to stream of SDHC cards, my guess is that the Wii's successor won't have a chance of showing up until 2012 earliest.

Your post does not make a lot of sense. First the DS still has a lot of potential left. It just sold over 3 million units in December in the US at its current price point. Secondly, it's better to introduce a new Pokemon Gen to the current owners of the Hardware. This will allow the Pokemon company feedback as to whether or not gamers enjoyed the changes or not, it's less risky. Thirdly, the DSi XL has not been released in the west and wouldl actually boost the sales of the DS. A new model would mean developers and publishers would need to develop new software and more importantly it would be harder for Nintendo to sell the new hardware to consumers because the DS has been so successful that many people would not be willing to upgrade so soon.

Why would Nintendo announce a new hardware up grade at the GDC. They could announce new hardware at any point they wish. The DS was not announced at the GDC nor was the Wii. Why would they do it now? Why would Ubisoft be included in this mix? This all points to BS being perpetuated on the internet just for giggles.

The GBA was still selling well when the DS arrived and on top of that the GBA had a new model coming which was the GB micro when the DS was on the way so your argument holds no ground in that respect, on top of that read my post clearly I said if the is new hardware not that it will be. You'll also find that every console never reaches it's full potential even when it's successor is on the way. Gold and Silver were introduced with the GBC and another gen of pokemon and was backwards compatible with the previous hardware who says the next can't be the same.

A Wii redesign is likely to arrive if the sales are down YoY after Q2 and they want the Wii to sell until 2012: add an HDD (or bigger flash memory), built in WM+, new color (black if it doesn't come out in the US), WSR included, HD output (720p) and something else...for just 230$! That would sell a ton, and likely carry the Wii seling great for another year...but I don't think it would be announced at GDC, too soon (NSMBW is still pushing the Wii, and the console is up over 2008) and not necessary now...maybe when Natal and Arc launch, they could announce this new version and launch it just before the holiday season.

Not really sure what this buys you.

The DSi traded downloading for GBA.

Everything that is mentioned is already being done or would need new software (games) to support it.

DS is doing fine, especially so long after it peaked, but if Nintendo has found something new for their handhelds, this would be the time.

They probably will try to be the first to release a new handheld, so they will have an advantage.

Yes the GBA was selling well when Nintendo announced the DS. They also announced that it was a third pillar and let's not forget that the Gamecube was not selling as well as Nintendo had hoped. However this situation is different. The Wii is selling exceptionally well and so is the DS. No third pillar is needed. Nor is a successor to the DS. All Nintendo needs to do is focus on software. Once the sales of the Wii and DS begin to decline and price cuts and bundles will no longer matter then the introduction of New hardware is needed but let's not get  ahead of ourselves. The DSi XL has not been relesed in the West and that will boost the sales of the DS, as I previously stated.

Note: Nintendo also had their Online network setup and wanted to take advantage of this new technology, which was becoming a standard. The GBA could not utilize it. Therefore new Technology had to be developed. There's no new technology that requires a DS2 to make use of it.

As for consoles reaching their potential, I think Sony and Nintendo have both gotten as much potential as they could from the PSX, PS2, and the Gameboy. Eventually systems must die becasue technology has moved on and the consumers have moved on also.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

The third pillar statement was a way for Nintendo to quickly back track to the GB series if the DS flopped and allowed the PSP to eat into the market share of the handheld market but as it didn't the GB series was killed off. One good reason for them announcing a handheld at this time is that it can allow the new platform to ride the DS momentum which is high even now rather then let it die down, all they need is backwards compatibility and many people will convert like with previous handhelds. You keep mentioning the DSi XL like it matters, the GB Micro wasn't even released when the DS arrived so what, they've already moved 125m DS' if they announce a new platform now I don't think it's that big a deal to them. Either way that's if the is any new hardware which I doubt.

Man, that guy's dutch translation is way better than mine...

Ok, back on the real topic: I don't see Nintendo have a reason to show a new/upgraded handheld/console this soon, unless it's that wii sensor add-on. We all know about it, but no tech demo about. I can see that happening in GDC, even with third party assistence.
