Forums - Gaming Discussion - Jrpgs Have Not Been That Bad This Gen

I just realized that jrpgs have not been that bad this generation. Here is the list of jrpgs that have received good reception from gamers (not critics)

Good Jrpgs:

Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Demon's Soul, Disgaea 3, Final Fantasy XIII, Resonance of Fate (from the people who have imported it and by the reception it is getting from Japan), White Knight Chronicles (people from many different forums have been really loving this game), Tales of Graces (again, from the people who have imported it and by the reception its getting from Japan) and Rune Factory Frontier.

Here is the list of jrpgs that received bad reception from gamers (not critics)

Bad Jrpgs:

Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Magna Carta 2, Cross Edge, Eternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms, Tales of Symphonia 2 and Dragon Quest Swords.

So pretty much half of the jrpgs that have been released have been received positively by gamers while the other half has been received negitively. Not the best gen for jrpgs but not nearly as bad as people have made it out to be.

Note: I made this list based of the overall reception these games have received from gamers. Some of you may have loved the games that is under "bad" and may have hated the games that is under "good", but again, I made this list based off of the overall reception from gamers (not just yours).

Yup! I agree that it's not that bad but this gen is not great for JRPG so far. If Versus live up to it's hype and both Suikoden 6 and Persona 5 will be released this gen then it will be great again.

What ever happened to Valkyria Chronicles being a SRPG? And why should I care what "gamers" think? Is it possible that a potential lack of great JRPGs just means that fans are lowering their standards? And isn't all that subjective anyways? By my standards, not every game in your list of great JRPGs is that great. I'm a gamer too.

Again, I did not build that list based of your or even my own personal opinion. And to say something like "maybe jrpgs fans are lowering their standards" is a somewhat disrespect statement. You are basically down talking people's opinions. But whatever, in the end, your going to think what you wanna think no matter what so I don't care.

For me it's not that they're getting worse, just they're getting repetitive. I've been playing the things since the SNES days, and it just doesn't feel like the genre has come that far since then, unlike most other genres.

WRPG's for me have passed them nowadays, they just kept pushing the boundaries, going further, wanting to do more and more incredible things.... where JRPG's stalled or even went backwards lol.

Saying that, I've no idea where I want JRPG's to go... but I just want something to come along and be all different and awesome.

Yeah, you just based your list off of user reception from what are likely forum members and other made up people. So unless you surveyed 400,000 people who bought Valkyria Chronicles (or whatever 50% of its total sales is), you can't really say it got positive user reception. This is the problem with basing a game's quality off of user reception; it's often just anecdotal and based off of an incredibly small sample size. With such a method, my one opinion matters just as much as Billy, Bob, and Santa Claus. And I'm just speaking hypothetically with that statement, but it's perfectly possible (and probably true). Let's admit it: This generation was below average for JRPGs. We were practically knocked on our butts in the last 3 generations with great JRPGs (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Star Ocean, Tales, Chrono Trigger, etc.). Of course, we've seen many games from these series this generation, but they're generally not considered as good as their predecessors (whether we're going by review scores or random user reception that I just made up).

And thanks for the cop-out ending.

JRPGs on TV consoles have been very average. WRPGs have been pretty good though, so not all is bad for RPG fans in general, especially if you include the hybrid RPGs like Brink, Borderlands, Mass Effect etc.

Do you know what its like to live on the far side of Uranus?

Not that I disagree that most JRPG's have been getting stale, pretty much that's been happening since last gen.

But saying that WRPG's have evolved that much is a bit of an overstatement. What WRPG's have surpassed what Baldur's Gate or Planescape Torment achieved? Was Fallout 3 as good as the Black Isle Fallout's or was it an Oblivion with a Fallout skin? Why was Oblivion a step down in gameplay from Morrowind?

WRPG's haven't evolved all that much actually.

In all honesty it's because I haven't been playing WRPG's for as long as JRPG's so they just feel new.

Still, it feels like in terms of pushing technology and broadening their scope and ambition, WRPG's keep pushing to do more and more. I don't really have the experience of playing older ones except some Might and Magics and Baldur's Gate though. From back then though they've come a long just in how much freedom you now have to shape the story, react to characters etc.

It actually depends on the prism you look at. Planescape torment allowed you to shape the destiny of each NPC in the game, can't get much more involved than that.

I agree that WRPG's have had a better capacity at story telling than JRPG's and they have tried, with better results, to evolve the genre than JRPG's have.

But I feel that both genres have been too stale, in comparison to the massive jumps of evolution they had through 1995-2000.
