Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony loses $18 per console in US, possible profit in UK

And what about the staff to support the PSN and the console? There's more to the equation than just console sales and software sales...

Also with the amount of layoffs in the video game industry, including at some of Sony's own studios I have to question just how profitable they are as well. Just remember that many of those companies closing are multi-platform while Sony's are basically developing for their own consoles. For every hit they have they also seem to have another game that sells poorly.

What Sony developed game has sold poorly? Or by "seems" do you mean you imagined?

I think this is a thread about how much Sony is losing on hardware sold per console, and debunking romours.

Hang on, I'll check...

Ok, i checked, and yes, yes is it. Odd that.

Atari 2600, Sega Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Boy Advanced, N64, Playstation, Xbox, PSP Phat, PSP 3000, and PS3 60gb (upgraded to 320gb), NDS

Linux Ubuntu user

Favourite game: Killzone 3

They making a huge profit in New Zealand because over here a ps3 costs $699 and an Xbox 360 eliite costs $450-$500 in comparison they are both the same price in the United States

no idea how to make this properly work

So...about 3 months ago, Isuppli provided detail analysis of how much it cost Sony to build each PS3 slim, and how they were "losing" $36 per console...I'm not getting why this thread seems to be a big surprise...did you'll miss that article?  In case you'll did...here it is again...posted http://www.qj.net/qjnet/playstation-3/isuppli-sony-close-to-breaking-even-with-ps3-slim.html, So, the question is one of your total ecosystem, and how much profit you're making.

Sony has already said that from March they won't have more losses on PS3 sells for $ 299.

After that the company will begin to seek the profit per console, at least until the next price cut.

I think the tremendous reception of the slim will force M$ to cut prices a bit sooner than preferred, but this also will force Sony to react sooner...the death spiral is great for customers, imho.  The unknown factor is Natal...and the reception it gets on launch...if it's a big deal...profits will have to come from PSN (possible sub fees) and software to keep pace on the price per console.

Is making a profit everywhere except the USA methinks (sells here for the equivalent of $340 US (after taking off the sales tax)). Which is why the Q3 earnings for their Networked Devices Division were in the black.

Sony already said the games unit was flat for profitability, and that reduction in costs for PS3 were countered by lower sales of PS2/PSP.   The surge for Networked Devices & Services was attributed entirely to a rebound for Vaio.

Its good to hear! I hope they can finally start to make a profit in the US. I dont wanna see any of the console manufacturers go under

Long Live SHIO!

Well at least it isn't over 200 per console sold.
