When looking at a game on Gamerankings, I always look at the lowest review first. It's bound to see through the hype at least a little and get to why someone might not like the game in question.

Thanks to 1up's review, I know that AC isn't a game for me. I was expecting more, well, assassination from an assassination game, and apparently there's only 9 guys you have to kill.

In the Game Informer review it states.

When you’re ready for a break from the story, a huge number of collectibles are scattered through the game – over 400 hard-to-find pick-ups and 60 secondary assassinations.

Sweet. Fetch items. Honestly i'm sick of people hiding objects behind crates and stuff and calling that added content. It's just the laziest way to extend a game.

I was going to reply at length, but this is basically what I wanted to say. Also, what the heck are "secondary assassinations"?

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

Teamxbox gave it 7,9

Well I personally loathe 1UP so I take it as an honour to ignore everything they put out, including this score.
However the few other scores in the 70's are worrying.

Definately not GOTY. Too much competition and this game has too many flaws. ME & SMG are the only two in the running with a slight advantage for SMG.

@ Garcian Smith: 2ndary assassinations are assassinations you can do for "fun" and not necessary to advance in the game = side quests.

Except they're still one of the top 3 game sites and the people who hate them think they're biased, apparently against all 3 platforms... Not to mention the popularity of egm, gfw, 1up yours and 1up show.

Interestingly at Gamerankings they have about a 70% thumbs down rating.

So 7 out of every 10 people who vote for that site think they either suck or are biased.

I agree completely. They seem to like to score things low and intentionally be as hard on everything as possible. I would say that could be a good thing, but they seem to let it get in the way of showing a game's strengths. Almost like they go out of their way to find things to complain about.

That said though, if the complaints they have against this game are legit (which they certainly seem to be, as repetitive gameplay is pretty serious), then that's a real shame. I'm going to get a ps3/360 in 2009 for RE5 and I've been keeping my eye on other games that look good as I would hate to buy a console that expensive (hopefully only like $200 or less by then) for just one game... Sigh.

Hrm, i think there has been enough negative comments and lower reviews than anticipated from other review sites to prove that 1up wasnt just lowering their score for effect.

Games i'm currently playing:

If we were judging it by average reviews.. it looks like SMG is clearly going to be taking the cake.. if it was for my personal choice of games, i'd say galaxy (but only based off my hype and what i've read, because, living in australia, i still haven't had a chance to go hands on with it -- 14 more days *twitch*)

@ckmlb

wasn't 1up having money troubles recently? Just wondering if that was related to their being disliked or what was up with that.

To Each Man, Responsibility

Well ign gave it a 7.7.

I'm sure the game will sell well and be remembered fondly. But there are just too many amazing games out this year for it to come close to GOTY.

And we all know that Zack & Wiki has a lock on that.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.
