Forums - Gaming Discussion - What happened to JRPG genre on consoles?

I blame FFXIII not because it is bad game (It's a great game) but because it took FFXIII long enough to be released and 2010 is very bright for JRPG consoles especially for the PS3. EoE/RoF, FFXIII, AT3, SO4, Last Rebellion, ToV maybe?, Atelier Rorona, VersusXIII and WKC 2 in Japan.

It's not FFXIII's fault. The thing is that over that last years we have gotten great Western RPG's that we/reviewers have been spoiled by it. Now any JRPG that comes out that isn't like obvilion/fallout 3/dragon:age/mass effect gets shit on for most part because they turn out to be just another JRPG. Demon Soul dodge the ball last year because its not like most JRPG, it was actually different than what we usually see from Japan.

Most of them are on the DS

@Scoobes- I agree with that statement, there are TONS of great JRPGs on the DS. I would say anyone that is an RPG fan that doesn't have a DS because it's got "bad graphics" or some dumb reason like that is doing themselves a disservice.

Some people really dislike handheld gaming. Others are fine with sitting on their couch playing their DS, I for one would much rather play console games as they don't strain my eyes and hands from the small screen and cramped playing position.

True, when I'm at home I'm playing on my 360, PS3 or Wii! But I take my lunch break at work and play, and when I'll be in the bathroom for a while!

I think JRPGs get hammered in reviews.  If it doesn't re-invent the wheel than it gets slammed regardless of quality.  Even if it does introduce a lot of new ideas, if it's turn based it gets hammered regardless of qualities.  Eternal Sonata being higher rated than Lost Odyssey makes as much sense as Haze or Perfect Dark Zero being the highest rated shooter this generation.

If you are complaining about the lack of JRPGs; you don't have a DS.

Get a DS; problem solved.

Yeah - the biggest problem is that handhelds are so popular in Japan right now! There's a ton of JRPGs on the handhelds!

I hope the Japanese will go back to real console gaming soon, because I find handheld gaming to be rather uncomfortable. I've got a DSi and I like playing it when I'm on the train/bus, but when I'm at home I want a real controller in my hands and a screen size that doesn't give me headaches. I don't want to sit cramped up on my couch with a "controller", that has the ergonomics of a brick, and a screen size rivaled by my calculator.

When people stopped buying them (even on the DS, they still don't sell well outside of the big series) and it hurts that reviewers have had a few noticeable changes in taste that affect the score.

They refused to change and they perished on consoles, but the DS has quite alot of them.

They changed to much

Miss the old golden days with Snes/Ps1... ahh all those great turnbased RPGs

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)
