Forums - Nintendo - Is the Wii bubble about to burst?

Read the story here

This article definitely paints a bad picture for the 3rd party situation and what could happen if gamers don't support many of the 3rd party games for the Wii.  This is not a good thing as it came from a original article in The Nikkei, which is a Japanese based paper.

 What is your opinion?

Damnit people, buy Scarface Wii! If these PS2 ports don't sell well, what faith can third parties have in the Wii?

No.

Could you elaborate on your answer?  I would like to see a healthy discussion on this and reasons why this article and news will not come true.   Yes/no type answers don't really give an explanation as to why you think it will/won't happen.

Sorry soriku but I haven't seen a title like that before (or at least can't remember it), but found it interesting because the paper that originally wrote the article is a Japanese paper. I thought that would be a bit more telling then gamers commenting about it on a discussion board.

Ouch, all those acronyms hurt my head. What games are they and what does it stand for? Also, are they ports that are done poorly or new games?

The reason third party software is selling bad is because it is well.. bad.

The reason third party software is bad is that barely anyone had realised the Wii was going to win when the games coming out now started production. Lots of games started production early this year, and obviously the bad ones got here first.

There's at least Umbrella Chronicles, Nights, and No More Heroes coming out for the holidays, with plenty of promising looking ones in 08 as well. I'll start being worried if those don't sell well.

I imagine lots of people are also waiting for the really big first party games, and only start looking at third party games after Brawl and Mario Kart arrive.

Okay well first lets look at the current situation. Anyone who thinks the so-called "bubble" will burst in the next few months is absolutely insane. With first party games such as Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Kart Wii, there are 3 guaranteed hits that will seriously push the console forward.

In the end of the year though, if third party games that were supposed to be big killer apps fail, I could see third party's abandoning the Wii. Of course thats saying that every game fails miserably/ has mediocre sale. I really don't see that happening right now. Games keep coming on the Wii every day, and unless Sony/Microsoft pulls out a serious reason to stop putting games on the Wii (I.E. Money), then in one year the Wii will be too far ahead for it to matter.

I agree with you on the belief that high quality games take time to develop and there will be delays and such in those cases too.

I wonder though with it being someone based in Japan writing the original article if there may be a paradigm shift occurring over there in Japan where gamers may be opening themselves up to switching to another console system or just focusing on the handheld market for now.

No ...

I'm not quite as "Optimistic" as John Lucas but I really believe we're only a few weeks/months away from Wii demand exploding. The greatest selling feature for the Wii is the enjoyment people get from playing it (typically with the simple multi-player "mini" games).

Imagine when 4 Million children, teens and adults open up their Wii on Christmas morning and start playing it. The uniqueness of the Wii and its reputation for being fun for everyone means that every member of the household tries it out and most of them have a really good time. There will be aunts and uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers, cousins and friends who all get to experience playing a Wii for the first time and most of them have a really good time. For every Wii sold there will be several potential customers who try out the Wii and become interested because of how different it is.

Just think about that ... 4 Million Wii systems leading to 8 to 20 Million potential customers of which many (if not most) will seriously consider buying one for themselves or their family ...
