Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why the PlayStation brand name is the strongest brand name in video games

CAL4M1TY, you have a point, it is my first ever thread so i might have a little :p, but i disagree with u a lil bit, PlayStation's brand is stronger than Nintendo's but I value everyone's opinion.  And to answer ur question on why its 3rd place by 8 million, is because of the price.  Sony has done great despite the price, but hurt too among casuals so i expect a huge comeback at 299, but they wont catch up to the Wii.  Wii is building its own strong brand too, so u have a point also.

Hmmm...let's look at the possibility of maybe a stronger brand name. I give you the word "Wii". Here are the sales of various items under the branding "Wii".

Nintendo Wii console=49 million consoles sold
Wii Sports=44 million copies sold
Wii Play=22.5 million copies sold
Mario Kart Wii=15 million copies sold
Wii Fit=17 million copies sold
Wii Music=2.5 million copies sold
Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree=3 million copies sold

Soon to be added...Wii Sports Resort

Let's forget all that for a minute and just say Playstation is the strongest brand. Here are the reasonings:

1. Excuses involving price to explain away lame sales to show it is a strong brand

2. Anecdotal evidence involving random people associating videogaming with the word "Playstation"

3. To be continued later in this thread I'm sure

4. Reserved for the next lame excuse presented after the #3 spot gets filled

DId I miss anything? Gosh, now that I look at the reasoning, Playstation sure does sound the strongest. It's so strong in fact that it's pushing a healthy third place behind lame brand names nobody can remember like Microwho and Nintenwhat.

I agree with TC... Just 10 years ago, Nintendo was the strongest brand name in video games, and that was replaced by Playstation

Kind of like how 'walkman' was the standard nickname for a CD Player, even if it wasn't a walkman

I'm pretty sure the Playstation brand will be just as strong next generation... but the generation after, I can see MS or Nintendo taking over (or Apple eh...)

your forgetting one thing

PlayStation 1 sales - 110 million

PlayStation 2 sales - 135+ million

Sony expanded the market for two generations. This is why PlayStation is a WAY stronger and most refered to brand name for most people.

PlayStation can't be the strongest brand name considering that Nintendo is.

Anyone that was around for the golden years of gaming knows that Nintendo IS gaming.

see my reason above, its the main reason.

if Nintendo won the last two generations they would have the stronger brand name. Sadly, Nintendo never had a strong brand name. SEGA had an equally strong name before the PS1 came to market. After this generation Nintendo will finally truly have the strongest brand name. They just need to expand the market like the PS2 did.

Do you have some sort of proof that Playstation is more refered to by most people? Please I want to see the study at least that you can provide me to even somewhat back up that load of anecdotal nonsense.

Sure those sales are nice. They are large. They are in the past though. I never said Playstation was never the strongest brand name in gaming. I'm simply saying it's no longer that. The name "Wii" is the strongest and my current sales involving the fastest selling console in history and the four of the biggest selling games in history (including the biggest) having that brand name puts the argument squarely in my favor.

My mom calls my DS a playstation...

4 ≈ One

Id agree its a commonly used term. Just because they call their system Playstation 1 2 3 4 5 6 whatever. So it sticks in peoples heads. Just like the words Gameboy do. And now Xbox is too. Just like nintendo did back in the NES and SNES days. But I think Nintendo is still the bigger more well know to people company.

"Name a gaming console" Playstation
"Name a gaming company" Nintendo
